Get ready to build a piece of 16-bit history. The LEGO Group and SEGA have officially unveiled their latest retro gaming collaboration: a brand-new, brick-built SEGA Genesis Console. This highly accessible set will launch worldwide on June 1, 2026. Fans can pick it up through LEGO’s official website, physical store locations, and licensed distributors for a very reasonable $39.99 in the United States, £34.99 in the United Kingdom, and €39.99 in Europe.

Numbered as set 40926, this 479-piece non-functional replica is a scaled-down homage designed for builders aged twelve and up. The model perfectly captures the classic top-loading design of the highly influential system originally released in North America in 1989. The main console measures an adorable 1.5 inches high, 6 inches wide, and 4.5 inches deep. Alongside the system itself, builders will also assemble two detachable controllers and a removable game cartridge that mimics the classic 1991 release of Sonic the Hedgehog.

A major highlight of the build is how deeply it leans into nostalgia. Recognizing that the classic hardware was known by different names across the globe, LEGO included sticker decorations allowing fans to personalize the system as either the North American SEGA Genesis or the international SEGA Mega Drive. The packaging even features deliberate scuff marks on the box art to simulate childhood wear-and-tear. As an added bonus, builders will find a hidden Sonic the Hedgehog mosaic tucked safely beneath the cartridge slot cover, which only becomes visible when the lid is lifted.

The creators behind the project are just as thrilled as the fans. LEGO designer Patrik noted that, like many of his generation, he vividly remembers the release of the system, calling the recreation of its intricate details with LEGO elements a fun challenge. SEGA's Vice President of Licensing and Partnerships, Alex Gomez, echoed this sentiment, sharing that the set allows fans to relive childhood memories through hands-on creativity.

Lego

Expanding the LEGO Retro Gaming Lineup

This release marks LEGO's second set based on SEGA's hardware, expanding upon the small, 260-piece Genesis controller (set 40769) that was offered exclusively as a gift-with-purchase for orders over $130 in September 2025. Because that model was retired within thirty days, this standalone console is poised to be considerably more accessible than its short-lived predecessor, as per GameRant.

This collaboration taps perfectly into the booming retro gaming trend, joining LEGO's impressive lineup of officially licensed hardware. This legacy began in 2020 with the massive 2,646-piece Nintendo Entertainment System, which famously featured a Super Mario Bros. cartridge and a CRT TV with a side-mounted crank to simulate a scrolling level, and continued with replicas of the Atari 2600 and the fan-favorite Game Boy.

Looking ahead, the gaming goodness doesn't stop here. The Genesis set reportedly won't be the only SEGA product arriving in the summer of 2026. At least two Sonic the Hedgehog sets are ostensibly targeting an August launch, including a $29.99 replica of Tails's Tornado-1 aircraft and 77120 Shadow's Mech vs. G.U.N. Trooper to retail for $49.99. Furthermore, LEGO is reportedly expanding its console lineup even further late in the year, with rumors pointing to the debut of a massive 1,911-piece PlayStation 1 replica (set 72306) expected to arrive in December 2026 for $159.99.
