Highlights

  • Microsoft expects Xbox to return to business growth in FY2027 following restructuring, layoffs, and cost-cutting measures.
  • Xbox content and services revenue declined 10% YoY in FY26 Q4 as Microsoft continued reshaping its gaming business.
  • Industry reports Project Helix's open platform strategy could challenge hardware pricing and software profitability.

Microsoft expects Xbox to return to growth in fiscal year 2027 (FY27) after a year of restructuring, layoffs, and cost-cutting across its gaming business. The company believes those changes have laid the groundwork for a turnaround despite continued financial challenges.

Speaking during Microsoft's FY26 fourth quarter (Q4) earnings call, CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, stated the company is making the "necessary decisions" across Xbox's content portfolio, platform, and operations to reset the business for long-term growth. He added that Microsoft has "the best IP in the industry, and talented studios around the world," and expects Xbox to return to growth in FY2027.

Xbox Still Faces Financial Pressure Despite Microsoft's Optimism

The outlook follows another weak quarter for the gaming business. Microsoft's FY26 Q4 results showed Xbox content and services revenue fell 10% year-over-year (YoY). The company also recorded severance expenses and impairment charges tied to Xbox as it continued restructuring its operations.

Separately, Windows Central reported that Microsoft is losing about $150 USD on each recently manufactured Xbox Series X|S console unit because of higher memory costs. While planned hardware price increases are expected to ease some pressure, rising component costs remain a challenge.

A short-lived sales boost ahead of the price hike has already faded. Recent Xbox service outages and discussions around an increasingly digital future have also added to the uncertainty.

Project Helix Could Define Xbox's Next Chapter

Microsoft's recovery target comes before its next generation of hardware arrives. Project Helix is reportedly expected after FY2027, meaning Xbox must improve its business without relying on new hardware sales.

According to Windows Central, Microsoft is also evaluating how open Project Helix should be. An open platform that supports PC storefronts could make hardware significantly more expensive and reduce software revenue if players buy games through competing stores.

The publication also reported that internal Xbox Ally data showed many new users purchasing games through Steam instead of Microsoft's own store. That makes the final strategy for Project Helix, an important decision as Xbox works toward its FY2027 growth target.
