Bandai Namco Entertainment has unveiled Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG based on the long-running anime and web novel franchise, Sword Art Online. Echoes of Aincrad’s Japan launch starts on July 9, 2026, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, following on PC via Steam on July 10.
Developed by Game Studio Inc., the game’s narrative is set in the castle of Aincrad, where the players are trapped inside a death game. The plot resembles the original narrative of the web novel and depicts the "SAO incident," with around 10K individuals trapped inside the MMO.
Gameplay of the Upcoming Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad
Sword Art Online Game Series Producer Yosuke Futami informed IGN that Echoes of Aincrad is aimed at making the game more accessible to new players. He also emphasized that the previous titles started in the middle of Sword Art Online’s narrative, which required previous knowledge of the franchise, and restricted its appeal to a niche audience.
The game centers on real-time combat, character progression, and NPC-based exploration. During the journey, players will navigate cities, dungeons, and encounter enemies (bosses and monsters), while upgrading equipment and abilities. Additionally, the game offers a reward system for achieving milestones that increases skills.
The upcoming Sword Art Online MMORPG introduces customizable avatars for the first time in the franchise’s game adaptations. Futami emphasized that the avatar mechanics can help new players better experience the setting of the game.
Expanding the Long-Running Sword Art Online Franchise
Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online is one of Bandai Namco’s most enduring multimedia franchises. It started serializing as a novel series back in 2002, and has since expanded into anime series, films, and gaming titles. As of this writing, there are 12 video games based on the IP.

Exclusive to the Bandai Namco Store, the Aincrad Edition adds a beanie, wall scroll, patches, and sticker pack to the Deluxe and Ultimate Edition features. With new mechanics and multiple editions, the publisher is reinforcing Sword Art Online’s gaming portfolio while sustaining engagement.
Following the launch in Japan, the game will be released globally on July 10, 2026. As per the official website, the Standard edition is priced at ¥8,100 ($51.40 USD), without taxes.
