Sega is broadening its Sonic the Hedgehog's 35th anniversary campaign with new collector products and game releases. Leading the lineup is a pair of playable Genesis cartridges created with iam8bit. The publisher unveiled the products during its June 23, 2026, anniversary livestream, where it also announced new Nintendo Switch releases and outlined additional plans for Sonic's 35th anniversary.
The centerpiece is the Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 35th Anniversary Legacy Cartridge Collection, each priced at $99.99 USD. Compatible with NTSC Sega Genesis consoles, the cartridges are scheduled to begin shipping in the third quarter (Q3) of 2026.

Sonic's Anniversary Adds Collector Cartridges and Switch Releases
Rather than reproducing the original releases in standard packaging, iam8bit has created new anniversary editions with exclusive presentations.
Sonic ships in a translucent blue cartridge, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 uses an orange shell, and one out of every eight units will be produced as a Chaos Emerald variant. Each package also contains a restored instruction manual with new introductory material and redesigned collector packaging.
The livestream extended beyond retro hardware. Sega released Sonic Frontiers: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, combining visual upgrades with every post-launch update released for the 2022 game. The company also announced two physical Nintendo Switch bundles arriving in October 2026 for $49.99. Classic Sonic Collection combines Sonic Mania, Sonic Origins, and Sonic Superstars. Meanwhile, Modern Sonic Collection packages Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sonic Frontiers, and Sonic Forces.
Ahead of the broadcast, Sonic Team head, Takashi Iizuka, discussed the anniversary roadmap and Sega's collaboration with Pico Park in an interview with VGC. Earlier in 2026, Sega stated that the year-long celebration would also feature digital retrospectives, fan gatherings, retail collaborations, live concerts, museum exhibitions, limited merchandise, and a narrative podcast.
The Legacy Cartridge Collection joins iam8bit's growing lineup of retro releases. That already spans titles including Mega Man X, Mega Man 2, Street Fighter II, Xcavator, Battletoads, Earthworm Jim, Disney's Aladdin, and The Lion King.
The expanded lineup underscores Sega's strategy of pairing nostalgia-driven collectibles with ongoing support for the Sonic franchise.
