Sega Sammy Sales Rise 17.3% Ahead of Q3 Game Releases

Strong full-game and licensing sales offset a shortfall from Sega Sammy's free-to-play titles.

Highlights

  • Sega Sammy's Q1 net sales rose 17.3% to ¥95B (~$596M USD).
  • FTP games missed expectations, prompting Sega to strengthen existing titles.
  • Stranger Than Heaven and Persona 4 Revival are set for January and February 2027.

Sega Sammy reported ¥95 billion (~$596M USD) in net sales for the three months ended June 30, 2026, up 17.3% year-over-year (YoY). Its Entertainment Contents segment, which includes games, generated ¥68.4B (~$429M), up 1.1%.

The operating income reached ¥2.3B (~$14.4M), compared with an operating loss of $3.5M a year earlier.

Sales across the company were generally in line with expectations, while operating income and adjusted EBITDA exceeded forecasts. Within Entertainment Contents, full-game sales and licensing revenue, including contributions from Rovio, performed well. Free-to-play (FTP) games, however, performed slightly out of expectations, leading Sega Sammy to bolster operations of current titles.

Licensing revenue is expected to increase in the coming quarters through IP anniversaries, adaptations of popular properties, and new Rovio titles. Sega Sammy is targeting ¥357B (~$2.24B) in entertainment content sales and ¥52.5B (~$329M) in adjusted EBITDA for fiscal year (FY) 2027/3.

The results also follow a difficult period for Rovio. Sega Sammy recorded a roughly $200M impairment loss on the studio earlier in 2026. CEO of Sega, Haruki Satomi, attributed the write-down to "rapid changes in the market environment" and the inability to fully implement Rovio's Beacon technology in Sega's mobile titles.

Major Sega Sammy games target Q3 and beyond

The company's major full-game launches are weighted toward the third quarter (Q3) onward.

Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch in January 2027, followed by Persona 4 Revival in February 2027. Sega reported that wishlist registrations and related video views are favorable, and it will continue efforts to build anticipation before release.

The Q1 results give Sega Sammy a stronger financial base heading into its heavier release period, but the shortfall of FTP games remains an area the company needs to address. Its upcoming titles and licensing activity will now play a larger role in determining how the entertainment content business performs through the rest of the FY.
