Highlights

  • PlayStation Studios already uses internal AI tools like Mockingbird to accelerate facial animation, amongst other things.
  • AI-powered transaction routing within PlayStation's payment systems has generated over $700 million USD in incremental revenue.
  • SIE CEO Nishino said AI will "augment" developers rather than replace them.

Sony has detailed a wider artificial intelligence (AI) strategy for PlayStation, confirming that AI tools are already being integrated into platform operations, first-party game development, and player-facing services. The announcement comes as the company prepares for the next phase of its gaming business.

During Sony’s latest financial results presentation, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO, Hideaki Nishino, stated AI would play a central role in improving production efficiency and expanding the range of experiences available on PlayStation. He stated that PlayStation Studios teams are already “automating repetitive workloads, improving software engineering productivity,” and accelerating areas such as quality assurance, 3D modeling, facial animation, and hair simulation through internal AI-powered tools.

One of the tools highlighted was ‘Mockingbird,’ an internal system that converts performance capture data into animated 3D facial models.

Nishino mentioned that the process, which previously required hours of manual work, can now be completed “in a fraction of a second.” Sony also revealed an AI-assisted hair generation tool capable of creating detailed strand-based 3D models from real-world hairstyle footage.

According to the company, teams at Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio have already implemented some of these systems in released projects, including Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.

Sony’s AI Strategy Extends Beyond Game Development

Sony noted that AI is also being deployed across the broader PlayStation ecosystem, particularly in digital commerce and recommendation systems. Nishino stated that AI-powered transaction routing within PlayStation’s payment infrastructure has generated more than $700 million USD in incremental revenue over recent years.

Likewise, the company plans to further expand machine learning systems to personalize recommendations for games, accessories, subscriptions, and merchandise.

Sony Games

The company additionally pointed to AI-driven features already integrated into PlayStation hardware. Sony cited the updated PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology on the PS5 Pro, which uses machine learning to improve image quality while maintaining high frame rates (FPS) in titles such as Ghost of Yōtei and Saros.

Nishino also addressed concerns surrounding generative AI replacing creative talent in game development. “The vision, the design, and the emotional impact of our games will always come from the talent of our studios and performers,” he said, adding that AI is intended to “augment their capabilities, not to replace them.”

The AI push arrives as Sony continues investing in its next-generation gaming platform, while add-on content, digital software, and network services remain among the company’s strongest-performing business segments.
