Square Enix has confirmed that development on the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy has largely wrapped its core production phase, with the project now entering final polishing, ixbt reported. The update comes from director Naoki Hamaguchi, offering the strongest indication yet that the game is approaching release.
Speaking in an interview (machine translated) with French content creator Julien Chièze, Hamaguchi said that the core gameplay experience is almost ready, and that they are currently in the finalization and polishing stages.
While Square Enix has not disclosed the game’s official title or a release window, the comment confirms that major development milestones have been completed.
The remaining work focuses on completing visual assets, cinematic sequences, and voice-over recording. As a result, a public demo or near-term gameplay showcase is unlikely, despite growing fan interest following the update.
Final Fantasy VII Remake 3 Development Status and Release Timing
Speculation has centered on a possible 2026 release, but the absence of any announcement at major industry events, including The Game Awards, points to a later timeline, with early 2027 emerging as the more likely target.
Such timing would align with the 30th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy VII, released in 1997. That milestone would provide a clear historical marker for concluding the remake trilogy.
The third installment follows Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, completing Square Enix’s multi-part reimagining of one of its most influential titles. As development enters its final phase, the project is positioned as a major release both for the publisher and for long-time fans of the franchise.
