Valve says it is working to replenish Steam Controller inventory after the newly launched device sold out within hours across several regions. The rapid sellout has triggered widespread frustration from buyers and a surge in resale listings online.
The controller launched on May 4, 2026, through Valve’s storefront at a $99 USD price point in the U.S. and around £85 in the UK. Reports from players in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Australia, and Japan showed the controller becoming unavailable within roughly 30 minutes in some markets.
Users also reported checkout errors and purchase failures as traffic surged during the launch window.
“Steam Controller ran out faster than we anticipated, and we hate that not everyone who wanted one was able to get it,” Valve stated on an X post published less than a day after release. The company added that it is working to get more stock ready and will share details on expected availability later.
Scalpers Push Steam Controller Resale Prices Far Above Retail
Shortly after the sellout, resale listings began appearing across eBay marketplaces in multiple regions. Some listings priced the controller between $220 and $400, more than triple the original retail price in certain cases.
The situation drew criticism on Reddit and social media, where players questioned Valve's decision to use a first-come, first-served sales model. Many argued that a reservation system, similar to the Steam Deck rollout, would have been a fairer approach.
Many players argued that the Steam Deck preorder queue at least guaranteed buyers a place in line over time. The Steam Controller launch, by contrast, left customers competing against scalpers and automated purchasing bots during a narrow sales window.

Valve Released the Controller Ahead of the Steam Machine Hardware
Valve first announced the Steam Controller alongside the Steam Machine mini-PC and the Steam Frame VR headset. It delayed the broader hardware lineup earlier this year because of rising component costs.
Valve hardware engineer, Steve Cardinali, previously told Polygon that the company chose to release the controller separately because it does not depend on RAM components currently affected by supply shortages tied to AI-related demand in the technology industry. “This doesn't have RAM in it, and it's not as complicated to start getting out the door for us,” Cardinali added.
He also noted that Valve expected strong demand and attempted to build enough launch inventory, though interest ultimately exceeded those projections.
The PS5 launch in November 2020 saw scalpers hoarding stock and reselling units at steep markups for months, with some consoles listed at more than twice their retail price. Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in 2025 told a similar story, with inflated resale listings appearing before the console had even sold out at major retailers.
Meanwhile, Nvidia's RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 sold out almost everywhere within hours of their January 30, 2025, launch, with resale listings on eBay climbing well above retail price almost immediately.
The rapid sellout reflects continued demand for Valve hardware, though limited stock and scalper activity remain persistent issues across major gaming hardware launches.
