Amazon Prime Video will stream three major anime titles in India, including a new Ghost in the Shell series and a reimagined Fist of the North Star adaptation, the company announced Friday. The move signals Amazon's growing investment in anime content for the Indian market, where streaming platforms are competing for younger audiences.
The lineup includes Science SARU's The Ghost in the Shell television series, a CG-based Hokuto no Ken -Fist of the North Star- anime, and the second season of From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman. All three titles will stream on Prime Video in India, with Ghost in the Shell receiving a worldwide release excluding Russia and China.
New Ghost in the Shell anime debuts July 2026
The Ghost in the Shell series, based on Shirow Masamune's manga, will debut in July on Japan's "Ka-Anival!!" programming block before streaming globally. First-time director Mokochan, known for animation work on DAN DA DAN and The Heike Story, leads the project at Science SARU. The production committee includes Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, Science SARU, and Production I.G.
Toh Enjoe, who wrote scripts for Space Dandy and Godzilla Singular Point, is handling series composition. A producer told attendees at Anime Expo last July that the anime would stay faithful to the original manga—a reassurance for fans wary of adaptations straying from source material.
Fist of the North Star returns with CG anime remake
The new Fist of the North Star anime commemorates the franchise's 40th anniversary. The CG-based adaptation of Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's post-apocalyptic martial arts manga will premiere sometime in 2026. Production staff said the series would adhere more closely to the original work than previous adaptations.
Fist of the North Star's original manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1983 to 1988. The franchise spawned a 152-episode anime series that aired from 1984 to 1988, along with multiple films and spinoffs. Viz Media began publishing a new edition of the manga digitally and physically in June 2021, introducing the series to readers who missed its initial run.
The third addition, From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman season 2, streams in India as it releases globally in July 2026. The fantasy series adapts Shigeru Sagazaki's light novel and returns director Akio Kazumi and studio Passione.
Amazon's anime push in India follows Netflix and Crunchyroll's recent catalog expansions in the region. The move brings both legacy franchises and new productions to Indian subscribers, who previously accessed limited anime content through legal streaming platforms.
