- BTS nears One Direction in pure album sales, gaining the title of the most popular boy group in the world.
- The global K-pop group has also taken on Taylor Swift with strong physical sales, including vinyls.
- The numbers showcase a long-term strategy rather than a sudden spike that involves streaming and physical sales equally.
BTS has claimed the top spot yet again in the US music market, capturing its seventh No.1 on the Billboard 200 with their latest album ARIRANG. The release, which arrived post almost four years of hiatus, moved 641,000 equivalent album units (dated April 4). This marked the largest single-week cumulative for any act since Billboard began ranking equivalent album units in 2014.
BTS ARIRANG Billboard 200 sets new sales record
The HYBE powerhouse’s pure album sales totaled 532,000, nearing One Direction’s Midnight Memories, which sold 547,000 units in 2013. Its stellar outcome was further backed by a strong physical strategy (516,000) that included 17 vinyl variants and nine CD editions. Notably, vinyl alone drove 208,000 copies, setting a benchmark for high-margin, now collectible formats. Interestingly, this number has also surpassed another record. According to Billboard, the biggest week for a vinyl set was registered by the opening week of Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl, with 1.334 million.
BTS marks biggest debut in a decade with ARIRANG
Although Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl achieved the high-water mark for any album by units in October 2025, with 4.002 million units, BTS now claims the highest spot as the most significant act of the decade. Beyond the figures of pure sales, streaming equivalent units also added 95,000 to their record, which represents 99.1 million on-demand streams.
Produced by HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk, ARIRANG comes after the group’s last album in 2022, titled as Proof. BTS’ latest album’s lead song Swim, which is thematically focused on identity and shared experience, is now projected to be a potential No.1 candidate for the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The comeback and the album’s momentum are quite visible in Europe as well, where ARIRANG topped the UK’s Official Albums Chart, while Swim entered the UK Official Singles Chart at No. 2. Simultaneously, all of its songs were placed in Spotify and Apple Music’s highest rankings.
BTS ARIRANG confirms Asian acts can dominate global markets
Before the charts settled, including BTS ARIRANG debut on Billboard 200, the cultural footprint of their return was visible throughout the world, especially in their home country. A free launch concert at Gwanghwamun Square drew a massive number of fans, showcasing the pent-up demand since the group’s break.
All in all, ARIRANG Billboard 200 debut stats serve as a barometer for the current state of the global music business. It shows that the K-pop model of high-volume physical variations could significantly grow in important Western markets. These record-breaking numbers indicate that BTS' influence has eschewed the usual "comeback spike" cycle in favor of a long-term, institutional dominance on the industry's streaming and sales tiers.
