Highlights

  • BTS has set a new standard in Japan, with Arirang delivering one of the year's biggest chart performances on Oricon.
  • The album's double chart sweep reinforces the group's lasting commercial strength in one of the world's largest music markets.
  • BTS' latest feat also showcases how K-pop is expanding dominance in Japan, with other HYBE acts also landing major positions on Oricon's mid-year rankings.

BTS became the first global male artist in 22 years to sell over 700,000 copies of Arirang in Japan in the first half of the year. This milestone, which was last achieved by British rock bank Queen, deepens the band’s footprint in the world's second-largest music market.

The septet’s fifth studio album topped both the physical Album Ranking and the Combined Album Ranking charts, according to mid-year data released June 25, 2026, by Japanese market tracker Oricon. The chart triumph highlights K-pop’s staying power in Japan, indicating a strong commercial grip on the country.

BTS' Arirang Dominates Oricon Mid-Year Charts

With this achievement, BTS becomes the first non-Japanese artist to lead the Combined Album Ranking, which aggregates physical sales, digital downloads, and streaming metrics for the tracking period spanning December 8, 2025, to June 7, 2026. Although Arirang ranked at No. 3 for the standalone digital album chart, its dominant physical sales tied with a benchmark set by Queen, since the release of Jewels compilation in 2004.

This commercial reception of Arirang aligns with a global critical consensus, where the album was recently named among the best releases of the first half of the year by Rolling Stone, NME, and The Telegraph. Similarly, Billboard has also named the BTS album in their list of The 50 Best Albums of 2026 So Far. It notably charted three weeks of success at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and had also historically moved 641,000 units in its first week.

ENHYPEN, TXT Strengthen K-pop's Japan Market

Oricon’s data further showcases that BTS’ iconic run is part of a wider, systemic consolidation of market share by South Korean talent agencies. Fellow boy bands ENHYPEN and Tomorrow X Together (TXT) also gained top-tier spots on the Oricon mid-year chart. As per reports, ENHYPEN secured the No. 4 position on both the physical and combined charts, while TXT seized the No. 7 place in physical sales and No. 9 place in the combined metrics.

BTS’ success comes alongside another milestone. This week, the group’s music video of their 2020 single Dynamite also attained 2.1 billion views on YouTube. Notably, Dynamite is the first K-pop track to top the Billboard Hot 100. As legacy songs continue to create a passive global scale, current releases showcase how K-pop captures and holds the structural physical market share across East Asia.
