BTS Return Resets K-pop’s Copyright Model?

BTS comeback may restructure global royalties, putting K-pop's transition from touring revenues to IP-driven income domination to the test.

  • BTS’ comeback shifts focus from tour earnings to copyright-driven revenue in K-pop.
  • The group’s ARIRANG rollout tests whether global streaming scale can translate into sustained royalty income.
  • With all BTS members registered under the Korea Music Copyright Association, the septet directly earns publishing and rights-based revenue.

When BTS takes the stage at Gwanghwamun Square, Seoul, on March 21, it will not just mark their homecoming, but will also become a strategic attempt to revive the global K-pop industry, which saw a slight slump during their absence. After a three-year and nine-month break marked by compulsory military service and personal projects, the group's full-circle comeback with the 14-track album ARIRANG is being regarded by industry leaders and analysts as a definite market inflection moment.

BTS Comeback Tests K-pop’s Global Demand Engine

The scope of BTS’ comeback is relatively large, even by the group's own historical standards. The concert at South Korea's symbolic heart will be streamed live in 190 countries via media platforms such as Netflix. Notably, ARIRANG exceeded 4.06 million pre-orders in a single week, indicating a possible turnaround in K-pop's physical sales sector that saw a 2.7% decrease in replication royalties (tied to album sales) in 2025.

As for the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), the stakes are fundamental in nature. The body had previously pre-cleared the album's tracks, including the lead single SWIM, and is preparing to process the rise in performance royalties related to the Gwanghwamun show. The Chosun Daily reported that BTS' upcoming global tour is projected to exceed the previous year's performance royalties of around ₩60 billion (~ $40M USD). The tour, which will visit 34 cities and will have 82 shows, could possibly draw an estimated attendance of 4 million people. Furthermore, the tour is also expected to produce approximately $1.8B in income, profiting off the highly profitable premium-margin "stadium tier" that only a few acts can obtain.

This "BTSnomics" cycle is special as it emphasizes the group's dual identity as performers as well as intellectual property owners. All seven members, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook, are KOMCA registered rights holders. This move assures that the new cycle's economic impact falls directly into publishing and associated rights, instead of just touring earnings.

BTS Reshapes K-pop’s Copyright Economics

KOMCA Chairman Lee Si-ha has described BTS’ comeback and Seoul performance as a driving force for "fair global compensation," in which the group's creative output could lead to a larger reboot within the K-pop copyright economy. The comeback strategy of the septet aims to generate a diverse revenue stream spanning from real-time streaming to downstream licensing by establishing the launch in a symbolic, open-air domestic environment and leveraging international digital distribution.

As BTS’ lead track SWIM hit the global audience on March 20, the industry's attention shifts from anticipation to the tangible impact of the ARIRANG cycle. Fans and experts are now looking forward to the March 21 live concert, where its 190-country livestream will serve as a high-stakes test of the group's real-time global commercial channels. Nonetheless, the true test of the ARIRANG era will be its capacity to transform its vast scale into a long-term, high-value copyright model that can resist the changing tides of time and consumer habits.
