Netflix has confirmed that Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames will begin streaming on the platform starting on Aug 27, 2026. The rollout gives international audiences access to the franchise’s latest compilation feature, six months after its theatrical debut in Japan on February 13.

In Yoshiwara in Flames, Gintoki Sakata ventures into Yoshiwara, the infamous pleasure district, on a mission to reunite a young boy with his mother. According to Netflix Anime’s post on X, the journey forces Gintoki and his companions to confront “the darkness lurking within the red-light district of Yoshiwara.”

The project was first unveiled during the Gintama Multiverse Festival in August 2025. Back then, Shinpachi’s voice actor Daisuke Sakaguchi stated that the production would reimagine Gintama’s Yoshiwara Arc “as a completely new production with entirely new animation.”

Gintama: The Movie 2026 Revisits the Defining Yoshiwara in Flames Arc

Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames follows Gintoki and the Yorozuya as they help an orphan named Seita search for his mother across Yoshiwara, a district ruled by the Yato warrior Hosen. The movie adds newly animated scenes and includes characters absent from that original run, including Enkaku, an aide to Hosen, voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi.

Taku Kishimoto, known for Fruits Basket and Haikyu!!, wrote the screenplay. Naoya Ando, an assistant director on Kemono Friends 2, directed the Yoshiwara in Flames movie at BN Pictures.

Rock band SUPER BEAVER performed the theme song Sanzen. Additionally, longtime Gintama franchise veteran Yoichi Fujita served as a supervisor for this film, while another veteran, Shinji Takeuchi, returned as chief animation director and character designer.

The film opened at no. 2 in Japan and generated ¥405.6M ($2.64 million USD) in its first three days in cinemas. By the end of March, Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames eventually recorded  ¥1.5B (~ $9.15M), almost closing in on the ¥1.74B (~$16.3M) haul of the franchise’s 2021 send-off, Gintama: The Final

Sorachi concluded the Gintama manga in 2019 after producing more than 73M copies in circulation. Nearly two decades after the anime’s debut and manga’s conclusion, the franchise’s box-office revenue and Netflix rollout suggest that its blend of parody and pathos still carries commercial weight, even as newer titles crowd the same platform.
