On June 4, 2026, Netflix officially announced that its original animated series Devil May Cry had been renewed for its third and final season, following the May 12 release of its second season. Following the confirmation, showrunner Adi Shankar confirmed the upcoming season as a deliberate creative choice, bringing Dante’s narrative to an end.
In his statement following the renewal, Shankar suggested that Devil May Cry season 3 will serve as the culmination of “The Force Edge Saga,” which was designed as a trilogy. He further reinforced the season’s narrative ambition, stating he is going to do “something very different.”
The series is based on Capcom’s famous Devil May Cry (DMC) game series and has been one of the platform’s most talked-about video game anime adaptations since its announcement. Produced by Studio Mir and led by Shankar, the series debuted on Netflix in 2025.
Vergil in Hell, Dante on Earth: What Devil May Cry Season 3 May Bring
Devil May Cry season 2 ended with Vergil staying in Makai to defeat Mundus, the current King of Hell, while Dante is sent back through the dimensional rift into Earth. The season also broadened the influence and lore of demonic powers across the series’ world with backstories of Arius and Argosax.
In this season, Dante learns the truth about his mother’s assassination, Lady, meanwhile, discovers that her father, John Arkham, is a double agent operating in Mundus’ court.
In Capcom’s original game, Vergil is defeated and enslaved as Nelo Angelo, a demonic enforcer, following his defeat in the secret ending to Devil May Cry 3. Shankar has reorganized the franchise’s timeline in his series, but season 3 appears positioned to draw from Vergil’s transformation.
Shankar has also compared Devil May Cry season 3 to Paradiso, the third book of Dante’s Divine Comedy, bringing his journey across the three worlds to an end. In the game, protagonist Dante defeats the main antagonist Vergil, which is likely to be the central focus in Shankar’s season 3 if that is what he meant by “crafting a blueprint for how this game is won.”
He also emphasized Vergil’s narrative importance, stating, “He doesn’t need to talk, his presence does the talking. His restraint is what I was most excited to bring to life,” in an interview with What’s on Netflix.
Later game entries in the series, DMC 4 and DMC 5, introduce Nero, established as Vergil’s son, and bring the final reckoning between the brothers. The third season may combine significant plot points from these parts that have not been introduced in the series.
Shankar detailed the series’ structure in his renewal statement. “This was always Dante’s Divine Comedy with guns and a red coat. Season 1 was Inferno, season 2 was Purgatorio.” He ended his statement saying, “See you all in “Paradise”.” While, Shankar gave a narrative direction, Netflix has yet to confirm a detailed plotline.
When Will Devil May Cry Season 3 Release?
Netflix did not announce a release date with the Devil May Cry season 3 announcement. However, it stated “coming soon,” meaning that the new season may be released in late 2026 or in early 2027. Devil May Cry season 2 came more than a year after season 1 dropped on April 3, 2025, on Netflix.
Nonetheless, Devil May Cry joins a short list of game-based anime like Arcane and Castlevania, that have sustained multi-season arcs on major streaming platforms. Despite the criticism for the first season, season 2 debuted with a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, even though fan reception has been divided over the adaptation’s liberties with the source material.
Nonetheless, Devil May Cry became a streaming success, with season 1 racking up 21.7M views in 2025, while Season 2 accumulated 6.4M views in its first two weeks. Across both seasons, the show has spent four weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 Chart for English TV shows.
