Highlights

  • Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World has crossed 16 million copies in circulation worldwide, including digital editions.
  • The figure was disclosed in Kadokawa's product listing for Volume 45, due June 25, 2026.
  • A fourth anime season, currently airing on Crunchyroll, is supporting fresh demand a decade after the franchise's English-language debut.

Kadokawa disclosed on April 27 that Tappei Nagatsuki's Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World light novel series has crossed 16 million copies in circulation worldwide, including digital sales. The figure was published in the company's listing for Volume 45, scheduled to ship on June 25, according to Anime News Network.

The disclosure puts Re:Zero among the most commercially durable light novel properties from Japan's MF Bunko J imprint, with circulation up from roughly 13 million copies in March 2023.

Written by Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shinichiro Otsuka, the series began in 2012 as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō before Media Factory acquired it for print, releasing the first volume in January 2014. Yen Press licensed the English-language edition in December 2015. Forty-four volumes are in print, with the 45th set for June.

Anime Adaptation Backs the Re:ZERO Light Novel Numbers

Re:Zero's commercial trajectory tracks closely with its anime adaptation, produced by White Fox. The first season aired in Japan from April 2016 and was simulcast internationally by Crunchyroll, which has carried every subsequent season. The series holds an 8.25 score on MyAnimeList and an 8.1 rating on IMDb.

The franchise's defining mechanic is "return by death," in which protagonist Subaru Natsuki dies and reawakens at an earlier point, retaining his memories. The device, paired with the series' political plotting and graphic violence, has given Re:Zero longer narrative legs than most isekai titles, where formula fatigue tends to set in by the second adaptation.

The 16 million figure was disclosed alongside the Volume 45 release date, with the fourth anime season currently in its first half. Season 4 runs 19 episodes across two arcs: the Loss Arc, an 11-episode block that premiered on April 8, and the Recapture Arc, which begins August 12. The season tops Anime Trending's Spring 2026 chart.

Genre crowding is the next test

Isekai remains a dominant fantasy export from Japanese publishers, with That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Sword Art Online, and Re:Zero anchoring the category internationally. The genre has also drawn the heaviest concentration of new entrants, raising the question of how much shelf space the legacy titles can hold as publishers and streamers ramp up adaptations of newer properties.

For Kadokawa, the test is whether subsequent cours and the remaining web-novel arcs — Nagatsuki has nine in progress — can convert anime viewers into novel buyers at the rate the first three seasons did.
