SK8 the Infinity director Hiroko Utsumi has revealed the first significant detail about the anime’s long-awaited second season: the story will take place during winter.
The update was shared Aug. 8 during the anime’s annual “∞ Day” livestream, which featured Reki voice actor Tasuku Hatanaka and Langa voice actor Chiaki Kobayashi. Utsumi also provided a new illustration showing the two protagonists dressed for colder weather.
Utsumi said production hasn’t reached the point where the team can show footage from the new season, but confirmed that work is moving ahead and that Season 2 is set during winter. The announcement clarifies that the reference is to the story’s setting rather than a winter release window.
No premiere date, trailer or additional plot details have been announced.
SK8 the Infinity Season 2 Remains in Production
The update comes almost four years after the second season was formally announced in August 2022 alongside an original video animation project. The franchise had first announced plans for a new anime project in July 2021 before identifying it as Season 2 and an OVA the following year.
That OVA, SK8 the Infinity EXTRA PART, eventually received a limited theatrical run in Japan in January 2025 before its March release. The four-part collection focuses on shorter stories involving characters from the original series and is available on Crunchyroll.
Season 2, however, has remained largely out of view. Utsumi’s latest comments indicate that development is continuing, but the production team hasn’t disclosed how far along the project is or when viewers should expect to see footage.
SK8 the Infinity premiered in Japan in January 2021. The original anime, produced by Bones and directed by Utsumi, follows skateboarder Reki Kyan and Canadian transfer student Langa Hasegawa as they become involved in “S,” a secret downhill skateboarding competition held at an abandoned mine. Ichirō Ōkouchi handled the series composition and scripts.
Utsumi previously directed Banana Fish and worked as a director on the Free! franchise before creating SK8 the Infinity with Bones. She returned to direct the EXTRA PART OVA, while the principal staff from the first season were announced as returning for the second season.
The official English-language SK8 the Infinity website continues to list a second TV season as forthcoming, but doesn't provide a release window.
For now, the winter setting is the clearest indication yet of where SK8 the Infinity plans to take Reki and Langa next.
