- U-NEXT will acquire anime studio GoHands, marking Japan’s first known streamer-led anime studio acquisition.
- The deal combines streaming, manga IP, anime production, and distribution under one vertically integrated system.
- Rising global anime demand and studio shortages are pushing companies toward direct IP ownership and production control.
U-NEXT Holdings, operator of Japan's second-largest video streaming platform, announced on May 25 that it has signed a stock transfer agreement to acquire anime studio GoHands as a wholly owned subsidiary. The acquisition takes effect from June 1, 2026.
The deal will combine the conglomerate’s streaming platform U-NEXT and GoHands in a system that simultaneously creates, promotes, and distributes original anime IP. The acquisition will consolidate U-NEXT’s content pipeline end-to-end.
The company already operates U-NEXT Comic, a digital webcomic label, giving it a source of original IP. The deal will also bring GoHands’ portfolio, including K, The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today, and Momentary Lily, under the company.
Researcher and journalist Matsumoto Atsushi, writing for Yahoo Japan’s expert column, called it the first acquisition of its kind by a domestic streaming platform in Japan. described Atsushi it as an “extremely unusual development.”
Japan’s anime industry has historically relied on production committees, consisting of broadcasters, publishers, and advertisers, rather than the direct involvement of streaming companies. Global streamers such as Netflix and Crunchyroll have invested heavily in anime production partnerships, but outright acquisitions of Japanese studios by streaming services have remained rare.
U-NEXT Bets on Vertical Integration as Anime Streaming Competition Intensifies
Matsumoto framed the deal as a strategic bet in the anime industry. “This acquisition can be seen as symbolic of the current challenges facing the domestic anime industry and the industry’s response to them,” he wrote on Yahoo Japan.
Matsumoto’s comments also reflect wider concerns inside the anime sector. IP holders are sometimes forced to wait years to secure a production slot at an anime studio, as global demand for anime outpaces available studio capacity. As per U-NEXT’s disclosure, acquiring GoHands as a subsidiary will strengthen its IP business and high-quality works in Japanese animation.
The acquisition will also help manage production costs with GoHands’ know-how and equipment related to animation production. U-NEXT’s GoHands acquisition suggests Japan’s domestic players are now adopting vertical integration models like global players.
