Highlights

  • Localization remains the core challenge for the Hindi dub of Jujutsu Kaisen.
  • Hindi vocabulary selection remains a key challenge in localization.
  • Time constraints on Crunchyroll projects impact dubbing quality and context.

The Hindi voice cast of Jujutsu Kaisen identified localization as the central challenge in adapting the anime for Indian audiences, while speaking to Outlook Respawn. The interview featured Vidit Kumar (Yuji Itadori), Lohit Sharma (Gojo Satoru), Sahil Kulkarni (Megumi Fushiguro), and Mani Puhan (Maki Zenin). They discussed vocabulary selection, audience expectations, and production constraints shaping the Hindi dub on Crunchyroll.

Kulkarni said the team focused on maintaining consistency in Hindi dialogues. “It should match the vocabulary of the current era. That is the only important thing. The trickiest thing is to match it perfectly through localization. You cannot make a hundred percent of fans happy,” he added.

Kumar noted that audience preferences remain split, with some preferring English, and some Hindi. This leaves the team in a constant position of compromise for Crunchyroll’s Hindi-dub audience.

Jujutsu Kaisen Hindi Dub on Crunchyroll Balances Language Expectations

Sharma said the approach mirrors the original Japanese version by keeping the content localized rather than shifting to English. He added that Hindi dubbing aims to reach a wider audience that prefers viewing in regional languages on Crunchyroll, stating, “We do not look at just 5% of the audience. We have to look at the whole world.”

The cast noted that this balancing act defines most localization decisions during production.

Addressing concerns about emotional intensity, Puhan said, "The fans have really appreciated the dub. They've liked the voice actors' performances and the overall recording. So maybe it's improving with time." The cast attributed earlier criticism to inconsistent execution and limited familiarity with anime dubbing.

Time Constraints and Technical Demands in Crunchyroll's Anime Dubbing

Beyond localization, the cast highlighted operational challenges. Kumar said, “The main issue is time, because if we get more time, the script will improve.” Anime dubbing often works under tight timelines, especially for simultaneous releases on Crunchyroll, limiting preparation and context-building. This affects performance quality, as actors may not always have full narrative visibility.

They also pointed to technical complexities such as lip-syncing, timing gaps, and maintaining energetic delivery.

Likewise, Kulkarni said, “Sometimes a character says something in Japanese where the lips open for two seconds, close, and then open again after five seconds. That doesn’t always translate naturally into Hindi.” Puhan added, “These reactions aren’t easy to copy either— you often have to listen two or three times to understand what’s happening.”

Altogether, the discussion reflects a shift in India’s anime ecosystem, with increasing demand for Hindi content. The JJK Hindi dub cast indicated that improvements in localization and production timelines will be critical in shaping how wider audiences engage with anime in India.
