A decade after its debut in 2016, Subaru Natsuki, one of the most beloved characters of the isekai genre, has returned. Produced by Studio WHITE FOX, Re: Zero Starting Life In Another World Season 4 continues the adaptation of Tappei Nagatsuki's light novels, following Subaru and Emilia to the Pleiades Watchtower. The trailer hinted at the dangerous dunes leading the group to the truth, being Guttony’s powers, which could help them bring back memories of all those who have been eaten by Lye Batenkaitos. But the first episode plays out like the calm before the storm.
The opening title sequence, Recollect by Konomi Suzuki ft. Ashnikko trumps season 3’s opening and end credits, while also showcasing what fans can expect from the season in terms of animation. The scenes are crisp while also incorporating some 2D and 3D animation, with an unforgettable hand-painted sequence, which we hope to see more of as the season progresses
Yusuke Kobayashi’s Voice Acting is a Highlight
The first episode of Season 4 follows Subaru in the aftermath of Season 3 at the Watergate City of Priestella after the war with the Archbishops of the Witch cult. As the scenes pan through the ruins of the city, it does leave a bit of slide-show aftertaste from One Punch Man season 3, but it is quickly reined in by Yusuke Kobayashi’s voice acting, who plays Subaru Natsuki. Among the ruins, at the end of the last season, Subaru finds out that Julius has also had his identity stolen by Gluttony, much like many others in the city and Rem. Julius Juukulius is one of the knights loyal to the royal candidate, Anastasia Hoshin, and the third person Subaru couldn’t save from Gluttony.
Subaru clings to every little possibility of someone remembering Julius, but it is just him. He gathers everyone to confirm the inevitable, and his helplessness and pain show in Yusuke Kobayashi’s performance. Before Julius, another royal candidate, Lady Crusch, also became a victim of Gluttony right before Subaru’s eyes, just like Rem, who lies lifeless at Emilia’s mansion. All their victims have three different states showing the three different characters of Gulltony Archbishops. While Julius is forgotten by others, Lady Crusch has forgotten herself, and Rem is in a sleeping beauty-like coma, many others are in the City of Priestella.
Subaru’s Goal Trumps The Threats: Sage Shaula
To save everyone in the city who has either been left nameless by Gluttony or transformed by the Archbishop of Lust, Anastasia suggests that the group travel through Augurai Dune to the Pleiades Watchtower to meet the Sage Shaula. This definitely won’t be an easy task, as the Dunes cannot be passed through easily, and for a group that big, which has its own psychological issues individually, it will be harder. Even the strongest knight of the kingdom, Reinhard Van Astrea, revealed he was not able to cross them.
Two, the Pleiades Watchtower has also been built to guard the sealed Witch of Envy, the biggest and most feared witch in the history of Re: Zero Lore. This is the same person who is in love with Subaru and haunts him almost every other episode. While her appearance always brings more depth to the story, it also means we can expect heaps of trouble for Subaru as soon as they reach the dunes or the watchtower.
The place is covered with a barrier that keeps everyone out, possibly by growing distance, while the dunes are filled with magic beasts. This could also lead to a full circle moment with the magic beast's blood flowing through Subaru right now, after his fight with the Archbishop of Lust. While his leg was infected in the previous season, the first episode of season 4 does show his hand also darker with bluer veins, which has not been talked about yet.
Subaru is No longer Alone On This Journey
The unsettling fear for the upcoming journey is clear in everyone’s eyes, but they are more focused on what's promised at the other end: answers by Sage Shaula. Subaru isn’t just opening Shaula has answered for their problem with the witch cult, but also a cure for Julius, Lady Crusch, and Rem. Amidst the tense moments, Betty brings in a sigh of relief as a comic touch. It could be her way of trying to help Subaru, as she is the only one who knows about his curse, but it doesn’t quite come off the same way. While she has hated Subaru for most of the show, by the end of Season 3, she accepted that he is good at heart and wants the best for her.
Throughout the first episode, Betty has not left his side; more so, she does not leave his lap. For the unversed, Betty is very old in age (over 400 years) but looks like a 12-year-old with a 4’ 7’ height. It makes her devotion to Subaru a bit awkward, which is in line with Julius later revealing that everyone calls Subaru ‘Little Girl User’.
Re: Zero has always been on the borderline of the harem trope, with Rem, Petra, Betty, Emilia, Witch of Envy, and Echidna all over him. But, Subaru has been devoted to Emilia out of love and others out of care, which has been made evident time and again. Nonetheless, Betty sitting in his lap throughout the episode does feel off, and awkward.
Another character who has undergone a 180-degree personality change in the last season is Roswaal L. Mathers. We only get a glimpse of him in the first episode, but his support for Emilia and Subaru now seems genuine and real. We do get an adorable moment for Garfiel with his mother (who has also forgotten about herself) and her new kids, whom she coincidentally names Fred and Rafiel. And the soundtrack in both scenes drives the emotions forward, while Roswaal’s background score turns him less menacing than before, Garfiel also gets redeemed from his past actions with the most emotional scene of season 4’s opening.
Echidna also makes an appearance in the first episode, but it is completely unexpected, leading to more questions about the lore of the world. Despite 3 seasons in, there is still much to find out and explore while Subaru’s journey has just begun in the isekai world.
As the story moves away from everyone’s individual character arcs, director Masahiro Shinohara has tied up season 3’s loose ends with the early episodes of the new season. However, the arc hasn’t wrapped up yet, and would go on for a couple more episodes, as Season 3’s ending has to be rushed. While it was expected to be 22 episodes long, due to production issues, it was wrapped up in only 16 episodes. Season 4 will continue to adapt the same arc from the light novels before moving on to the next arc, possibly in the next cour.
Re: Zero season 4 is currently streaming on Crunchyroll on a weekly schedule, with the next episode releasing on April 15, 2026.
