Highlights

  • Amazon Games will not release any more content updates for New World, with Season 10 and Nighthaven update marking the end of active development.
  • The servers will remain live through 2026, and players will get at least six months’ notice before any shutdown or gameplay impact.
  • This decision follows major layoffs at Amazon, with the company shifting focus away from costly AAA MMO development toward other priorities.

Amazon Games has officially ceased active development on its fantasy MMO, New World, ending four years of steady content updates and expansion. The recent launch of Season 10 and the Nighthaven update will serve as the last major release for both PC and console players.

Why Is Development Ending for New World?

While New World servers will remain online through 2026, Amazon promises to give the community a minimum of six months’ notice before any significant changes that affect game access. The announcement follows substantial layoffs across Amazon’s gaming division, signaling a strategic shift in Amazon’s approach to AAA game development.

Amazon’s decision is rooted in sustainability concerns, as the company found it unviable to maintain steady content production for New World. Despite periodic player spikes and a cross-platform push, the title struggled to sustain high engagement post-launch. The move is part of broader company restructuring following 14,000 layoffs, with resources now redirected away from first-party MMOs.

What Happens Next for Players?

New World will remain available for purchase and play, including in-game currency, until at least the end of 2026. Free access has been granted to the final expansions, and Amazon says ongoing events like world bosses will continue in limited form. Amazon’s minimum six-month notice policy gives players time to prepare for any future shutdowns.
