Highlights

  • Consoles receive 20 community mods, narrowing the PC-console gap with official support for new races and subclasses.
  • Gameplay is refined through PHB2024 rule updates, weightless tutorial chests, and specialized Dark Urge equipment support.
  • Character customization expands with 36 hair colors alongside visual makeovers for prominent NPCs like Isobel and Florrick.

If you blink, you might just miss another massive update for Baldur’s Gate 3. Even though it is a premium game you only pay for once, Larian Studios' massive RPG has lived the life of a live-service project. Surprising fans nearly a year after what many assumed was the game's final major update, a new free content drop is available right now across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. According to the Gamer, this update will focus heavily on community-requested features, performance boosts, and bringing highly anticipated mods directly into the official console versions.

Console players are the primary beneficiaries of this latest rollout, receiving 20 new pieces of content that significantly narrow the modding gap between PC and consoles. The biggest highlights are the new playable options, including the Shadar-Kai race, which lets players choose between distinct Netherese and Elven variants.

Character build diversity is further expanded with three major subclasses: the Way of the Forge Monk, which focuses on bludgeoning damage, metallic magic, and pyromancy; the College of Command Bard, designed around leading allies into battle; and the Hellcleaver Barbarian, a fiery brawler that gains massive buffs when they or their enemies are burning.

Massive Quality-of-Life Gameplay and Mechanic Tweaks

Beyond the major classes, the update weaves a massive list of community-created mods right into the base game for console players to enjoy. Players can now easily summon and dismiss a weightless tutorial chest containing starter gear, roll five classic D&D-themed dice, and choose from 10 newly unlocked Origin backgrounds for Tav, as per Screenrant.

Mechanical tweaks ensure that a Monk's bonus unarmed strike is no longer tied to the attack action, the camp statue bless buff now applies to the entire party, and Cleric domains have been updated to reflect PHB2024 rules. Additionally, Githyanki Psionics are no longer treated as spells, allowing them to be cast even while silenced, and Dark Urge players now have transmogrify support for Slayer equipment alongside new Dark Urge Dragonborn head assets.

Fresh Cosmetics, Unique Items, and NPC Makeovers

The fun doesn't stop with gameplay mechanics, as the patch also includes plenty of visual flair and unique items. You can now wield Archduke Gortash's cane as a weapon, or finally recruit Squire the Crestfallen Hound to your camp. Cosmetically, the character creator has been blessed with 36 new natural hair colors and braided "Snails Hair" options for all races. Even the NPCs are getting makeovers: Isobel has been entirely restyled with a new outfit, makeup, and hair color while losing her face tattoos, and Counselor Florrick has finally had the dirt scrubbed from her character model.

Even if you played Baldur’s Gate 3 at launch and got your fill, Larian's continued support proves it is always worth cracking back open. Building on the massive Patch 8 update—which introduced cross-play and a photo mode—these constant quality-of-life tweaks ensure the game remains one of the most polished titles in the modern landscape.

The updates from 1.0 through now have cumulatively added so much that your next playthrough could feel completely different. At this point, you can roleplay pretty much anything you want, cementing Baldur's Gate 3 not just as one of the best RPGs of all time, but simply one of the best games ever made.
