Highlights

  • Bungie will end Destiny 2 live-service development with the Monument of Triumph update on June 9, 2026.
  • Sony disclosed a $765M impairment loss tied to Bungie assets after Marathon launched earlier this year.
  • Monument of Triumph adds returning systems, permanent activities, and long-term support updates for Destiny 2.

Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2 will receive its final live-service content update on June 9, 2026, marking the effective end of the game’s long-running expansion cycle. The update, titled Destiny 2: Monument of Triumph, will become the last major addition to the shooter as Bungie shifts resources toward future projects and new franchises.

The announcement has intensified discussion around whether plans for future Destiny 2 expansions had already been scaled back internally. Many players had already viewed 2024’s The Final Shape as the game’s final major expansion. In a blog post published May 21, 2026, Bungie declared, "It has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.”

The decision follows a difficult stretch for Bungie and parent company Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion USD in 2022, but later acknowledged that the franchise had underperformed expectations. Bungie also reduced its workforce by roughly 17% after The Final Shape launched.

Sony recently disclosed a $765M impairment loss tied to Bungie-related assets following the release of the extraction shooter Marathon earlier in 2026.

Concerns surrounding Destiny 2’s declining player count and engagement had increased over the past year. Uncertainty around the game’s content roadmap also grew as Bungie scaled back long-term expansion plans and shifted focus internally.

Monument of Triumph Update Reshapes Destiny 2's Endgame Future

The Monument of Triumph update introduces several returning systems and permanent gameplay changes tied to the game’s long-term preservation. Bungie is restoring the original Director interface, refreshing raid and dungeon rewards, adding a permanent Pantheon activity, and introducing new subclass abilities alongside Exotic armor updates.

The update also revives Sparrow Racing League permanently while reworking Gambit, Crucible, and Portal activities. Seasonal events such as Festival of the Lost, Solstice, Guardian Games, and The Dawning will be retired, with related rewards becoming available through engrams at a Monument of Triumph vendor.

The changes have fueled broader Destiny 2 legacy discussion across the community, particularly around the game entering what many players describe as Destiny 2 maintenance mode. While Bungie did not officially use that term, the studio confirmed active development is ending and indicated that Destiny 2 will remain playable, similarly to the original Destiny.

The announcement effectively marks the end of Destiny 2 as an active live-service platform. It also places the franchise alongside games such as Anthem, Marvel’s Avengers, and Halo Infinite, which either ended large-scale support or shifted toward maintenance-focused updates after struggling to sustain long-term engagement.
