Esports World Cup 2026 Shifts to Paris Amid Travel Concerns
From Riyadh to Paris: Regional instability forces the Esports World Cup 2026 to relocate.
Highlights
- Esports World Cup 2026 is shifting from Riyadh to Paris amid Middle East travel and security concerns.
- The event features 25 competitions across 24 esports titles with a prize pool exceeding $75M.
- Valve approval may still be required for the CS2 Esports World Cup 2026 venue adjustment.
The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 is moving from Riyadh to Paris as worsening regional instability and airline disruptions complicate plans for one of the largest gaming events in the world. Multiple industry stakeholders with direct knowledge of the discussions confirmed the relocation plans to Outlook Respawn. However, the EWC Foundation has not publicly announced the change.
The tournament was originally scheduled for Riyadh from July through August 2026. Concerns around travel access reportedly became the deciding factor behind the move.
More than 2.5K players and support staff attended the previous edition of the event. Airlines suspending or reducing Middle East routes reportedly created major logistical risks for a tournament operating across multiple venues over several weeks.
The broader regional situation has already disrupted other international competitions. Formula 1 (F1) previously canceled both the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix following security concerns linked to the conflict involving Iran.
Esports World Cup Paris Move Raises Logistics and CS2 Questions
The EWC 2026 Paris transition affects an event spanning 25 competitions across 24 titles, including League of Legends (LoL), Valorant, Dota 2, Fortnite Reload, Rocket League, and Counter-Strike 2 (CS2). The total EWC prize pool in 2026 exceeds $75 million USD, while the Club Partner Program covers 40 organizations with $20M in funding.
One unresolved issue involves CS2 in EWC 2026, scheduled for August 12-23 with 32 teams and a $2M prize pool. Valve rules require approval for significant format or location adjustments, though it remains unclear whether organizers have already secured an exception.
Sports marketing agency, Strive Sponsorship's managing director, Malph Minns, told Games Beat that moving or rescheduling major events “isn’t as unusual as some may think” following recent disruptions across global sports and entertainment.
With the EWC moving to Paris, sponsorship agreements are not expected to be disrupted significantly. Analysts noted that many partners already operate heavily across Europe, potentially giving brands closer access to live audiences than at the previous Saudi Arabia esports event venue.
