Ex-Rockstar Animator Says GTA VI Could Still Face Another Delay

Rockstar's commitment to polishing its games could still influence GTA VI's release schedule.

Highlights

  • Former Rockstar animator, Mike York, says another GTA VI delay remains possible if the game needs additional polish.
  • Take-Two continues to target GTA VI's Nov 19, 2026 release despite ongoing delay speculation.
  • Traders currently assign an 11% chance that GTA VI will be postponed again.

Rockstar Games is still targeting Nov 19, 2026, for the release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI). Still, former Rockstar animator, Mike York, believes another delay remains a realistic possibility if the studio determines the game needs more time. His comments come as fans await a potential marketing update ahead of Take-Two Interactive's Aug 7, 2026, earnings call, where investors are expected to look for progress on the publisher's biggest upcoming release.

Speaking to Indy100 through covers.com, York, who worked at Rockstar between 2012 and 2019 and contributed to GTA V, noted he no longer has insight into GTA VI's development. However, based on his experience at the studio, he stated he "would not be shocked at all" if Rockstar delayed the game again to ensure it meets its quality standards.

Former Rockstar Developer Says Quality Comes First

York explained that Rockstar has historically been willing to extend development if late-stage testing uncovers issues. Using a final mission as an example, he pointed out that if developers feel it still requires more polish or contains unresolved bugs, "they'll push it six more months if they have to."

He also believes another postponement would not significantly affect demand. According to York, Rockstar is in a position where players are willing to wait if the studio decides additional development time is necessary. His remarks reflect his personal assessment based on his previous experience at Rockstar rather than knowledge of the game's current production status.

Take-Two Sticks to November as Fans Await the Next Trailer

York's comments contrast with Take-Two's latest public guidance. During an investor update in mid-July, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Strauss Zelnick, reiterated that GTA VI is still "planned" to launch on Nov 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Speculation around Rockstar's next trailer has intensified ahead of the earnings call. GTA VI trailers have previously debuted around major Take-Two investor events, leading Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson to point to Aug 6, 2026, as a possible window for a new reveal. However, fans also remember that Rockstar announced the game's second delay in late 2025 shortly before a shareholder meeting.

While discussions about another postponement continue, betting markets remain largely confident in the current launch window. Polymarket currently places the probability of another GTA VI delay at 11%, indicating that most traders still expect Rockstar to deliver the game in November 2026.

Even so, York's comments reinforce the studio's long-standing approach of delaying releases when additional polish is needed before launch.
