Highlights

  • John Ricchio says GTA VI's console-first launch is a development choice.
  • Fixed console hardware makes optimization easier than on a PC, Ricchio explains.
  • GTA VI follows Rockstar's console-first strategy, seen with GTA V and RDR2.

Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on Nov 19, 2026, but PC players are still waiting for a release date. Rockstar Games has not explained the gap. However, former Rockstar producer, John Ricchio, believes the answer lies in how the studio plans development.

Ricchio shared his views during a recent interview on the KIWI TALKZ YouTube channel. He previously worked on Red Dead Redemption (RDR), GTA V, and Max Payne 3. His comments offer a rare look at Rockstar's platform strategy from someone who helped build its biggest games.

Former Rockstar Producer Explains the Console-First Approach

Ricchio stated that he always preferred developing for consoles first. Fixed console hardware gives developers a clear target, making optimization easier from the start. He summed up the approach by saying, it's generally wiser to initiate with the “constraints and then extend because shrinking is a lot harder than extending."

Ricchio also dismissed the idea that Rockstar has unlimited development capacity. He pointed out that resources are "always limited," even at a studio with major financial backing. Every decision comes with a tradeoff.

PC development is different. Developers must support a wide range of processors, graphics cards, and system configurations. That adds more testing and optimization work.

Ricchio argued that every development decision involves tradeoffs, saying that "spending money on that" means those resources cannot be used elsewhere.

Rockstar has Followed This Strategy Before

The strategy is familiar, with GTA V launching on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 before arriving on PC in 2015. RDR 2 also arrived on consoles first before launching on PC about a year later.

Ricchio noted that Rockstar wants to bring its games to as many platforms as possible. He cited the original RDR as an example. According to him, a PC build existed years before the game eventually launched on Steam. The delay was a business decision, not a technical limitation.

GTA VI Ambitions Could Also Affect the PC Timeline

Ricchio's comments contrast with remarks Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick made in a recent Bloomberg interview, where he stated the company tries to give Rockstar "unlimited financial, creative human resources" to pursue its vision. Zelnick has also said the company is working to reduce crunch while giving developers the time they need.

GTA VI is expected to be Rockstar's biggest project yet. The game is set to feature a larger open world and more advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-driven NPCs. Building those systems across multiple platforms increases development complexity.

Meanwhile, Digital Foundry believes recent GTA VI screenshots show a level of detail beyond what current consoles typically deliver. That has led to speculation that Rockstar is already preparing a PC version, although the studio has not confirmed it.

For now, Rockstar's focus remains on its console launch. With no PC release date announced, the studio appears to be following the same console-first strategy used for its previous major releases.
