Sony Advances PlayStation's Digital Shift on Multiple Fronts
Sony announces major PlayStation changes as digital distribution takes center stage.
Highlights
- Sony will end new PlayStation game disc production from January 2028.
- PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Stores will close by July 2027.
- GTA VI and Xbox signal the industry's shift toward digital games.
Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs from January 2028, ending disc editions for future first and third-party launches on the platform. Games already announced with physical releases before the deadline will not be affected, according to a PlayStation Blog post published on July 1, 2026.
Sony explained that the decision follows changing consumer habits and the broader entertainment industry's shift toward digital media.
The company stated, "The general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs," describing the move as a response to changing consumer preferences. It added that it will continue investing in how players access games while supporting purchases through both the PlayStation Store and retail partners.
PS3 and PS Vita Store Closures Follow Sony's Platform Transition
Sony also outlined plans to retire the PlayStation Store on older platforms. The PS3 Store will begin closing in Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua in August 2026, followed by additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries later in the year. In July 2027, the remaining PS3 stores and the PlayStation Store on PS Vita will shut down worldwide.
After the closures, new content purchases will no longer be available.
Players will still be able to download previously purchased games and content for the foreseeable future. Sony noted that the PS3 and PS Vita are "no longer able to support" the modern commerce and payment systems used by the PlayStation Store.
GTA VI and Xbox Reflect Changing Software Distribution
Sony's announcement comes shortly after Take-Two Interactive confirmed that physical editions of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) will ship with boxed download codes instead of game discs.
Microsoft is also exploring a different approach to physical ownership. According to The Verge, the company is testing an internal feature called Disc2Digital. The feature would allow owners of compatible Xbox Series X and Xbox One disc games to receive a digital license after installing the game. In turn, players will be able to access digital copies of their physical titles without needing the disc for continued play.
Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are not expected to be supported. The digital entitlement would stay linked to the original disc and transfer if it were sold or used on another account. Supported games could also gain access to Xbox Cloud Gaming and Play Anywhere.
The latest announcements highlight how major platform holders are reshaping game distribution while taking different approaches to supporting existing physical game libraries.
