Fortnite Returns to iOS: 3.4M Downloads Mark a Historic Comeback
Epic Games sees a historic 3.4M downloads as Fortnite returns to iOS globally, sparking a spending surge across international markets despite ongoing disputes with Apple.
Highlights
- Fortnite’s global iOS relaunch achieved a historic 3.4 million downloads in its first week.
- International markets outperformed the U.S., driving a six-week surge in player spending.
- The game remains blocked in Australia due to ongoing legal disputes with Apple.
Fortnite has officially made its grand return to Apple devices worldwide, and the community's response has been nothing short of staggering. In its first week back on the App Store globally in mid-May 2026, the battle royale juggernaut pulled in an estimated 3.4 million downloads. That massive surge marks an eight-year high for the game, standing tall as its most successful seven-day stretch since its original launch month back in 2018.
According to data from analytics firm AppMagic, shared by PocketGamer, this 3.4M figure represents the game's fourth-strongest week ever on the iOS App Store. To put the hype into perspective, this relaunch nearly matched Fortnite’s historic 2018 debut week of 3.7M installs and comfortably beat its second week of life, which saw 3.1M downloads.
The daily activity paints an even wilder picture of the game's explosive comeback. Installs skyrocketed by 1,408%, climbing from a quiet 19,000 downloads on May 18 to nearly 290,000 the very next day. By May 23, daily installs hit a jaw-dropping peak of 674,000. That massive single-day surge approached the game's absolute all-time record of 764,000 daily downloads set during its original iOS launch frenzy. It also effortlessly surpassed the previous daily install peak of 569,000, which was recorded on May 24, 2025, shortly after the game trickled back onto Apple devices in the United States.

International Markets Drive Growth as U.S. Lags Behind
Interestingly, the United States was left in the rearview mirror during this global wave. International markets carried the momentum, with Saudi Arabia leading the charge at an incredible 474,000 installs. European fans were just as eager; France recorded 366,000 downloads, and the United Kingdom pulled in 307,000.
Each of these regions significantly outpaced the U.S., which recorded just 151,000 installs during the same period. Major contributions also poured in from other newly reopened territories like Germany, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and Canada.
This massive influx of players has already made waves financially, pushing player spending through the App Store to a six-week high. While analysts are still watching to see if these downloads turn into active, long-term spenders, the launch is a definitive victory for Epic Games in its long-running legal warfare with Apple.
Fortnite originally launched on iOS in March 2018 but was famously kicked off the platform in 2020 after Epic violated App Store rules to bypass Apple’s in-app payment systems. While the game returned to select markets like the U.S. last year, this recent global re-release finally reopened the floodgates for the European Union, Japan, Canada, and beyond.
However, the global rollout isn't completely universal just yet. Fortnite remains frustratingly unavailable for players in Australia, a holdout due to what Epic Games describes as an "illegal payment arrangement with Apple".
