France has awarded 28 members of Montpellier-based Sandfall Interactive the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters for their work on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The honor was presented this week by the Ministry of Culture, marking a rare collective recognition for a full video game development team.
The distinction signifies growing institutional acknowledgment of video games as a cultural art form.
Established in the 1950s, the Order of Arts and Letters recognizes major contributions to the arts. Previous game industry recipients include Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, and Rayman designer Michel Ancel.
While comparable to a British knighthood, the French order does not grant recipients the title “Sir,” and is awarded to roughly 200 people worldwide each year.
At the ceremony, French Culture Minister Rachida Dati said the Republic “wished to distinguish today was not an individual journey, but the brilliant success of a collective.”
She added that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 “has established itself as a major moment in the history of French video games,” and also noted that the success shows “video games have reached a new level of recognition.”
Record Game Awards Run Elevates Clair Obscur’s Global Standing
Released in April 2025, the title achieved critical and commercial acclaim. Sandfall set a record at last year’s The Game Awards with 13 nominations and secured nine trophies, marking the highest total wins in the event’s history.
French President Emmanuel Macron earlier congratulated the studio, calling the achievement “great pride for Montpellier and for France.” The team’s awards stage appearance in Breton striped shirts and red berets became a widely circulated cultural image, embraced by fans. The attire evoked recognizable symbols of French national identity and heritage, reinforcing the game’s cultural roots.

Dati said the game’s success arrives during a difficult period for the global games sector and restores “confidence, energy, and momentum.” She highlighted the production’s multidisciplinary scope, citing art direction rooted in Haussmann-era Paris and Belle Époque influences, reinterpreted to create a distinct world, alongside its narrative depth.
She also pointed to its music, later performed in philharmonic concerts, with tours planned across France and Europe, alongside voice performance and gameplay innovation.
Sandfall Interactive is based in Montpellier and is closely tied to the city’s growth in the creative industry. The team has an average age of 32, with many developers working on their first shipped title. The project originated from early concepts developed by Guillaume and collaborators before the studio formally formed.
In a LinkedIn post, the studio wrote, “This distinction honors us, and our deepest thanks go especially to our team who shaped this world and to the millions of players who have brought it to life.”
The ministry’s collective knighthood affirms Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as both a commercial success and a state-recognized cultural work, reinforcing France’s view of video games as a core creative industry. It also signals broader institutional momentum toward treating game development on par with traditional arts within national and global cultural discourse.
