Highlights

  • Hideo Kojima rejects AI-generated art, insisting that true creative work must remain human-driven.
  • He distanced himself from a recent AI-assisted teaser controversy to reaffirm his commitment to human artistry.
  • Kojima will only use technology as a support tool for gameplay in upcoming titles like OD and Physint.

Legendary game director Hideo Kojima has firmly shut down the idea of using artificial intelligence as a creative tool, declaring he is entirely "not interested" in AI-generated art. The definitive stance arrives just days after critics and fans heavily questioned his involvement in a controversial, AI-assisted promotional teaser. Despite the unexpected cameo, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding franchises has made it clear that human artistry will remain at the absolute core of his work.

The controversy kicked off in late May 2026, when fans criticized Kojima for appearing in Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn's AI-generated short film, Satellites II. Unveiled at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in collaboration with Prada, the 90-second teaser depicted the two creators crash-landing on an alien planet before traveling to an event at New York’s Chelsea Hotel.

The gaming community, which has been resisting what many call the "enshittification" and soullessness of AI art, was deeply disappointed to see one of the medium's most revered auteurs engaging with the technology. Refn defended the project as an artistic experiment, explaining that the two friends felt they were somehow split from the same consciousness, which sparked the idea for a space odyssey traversing a sci-fi dreamscape to explore new creative possibilities through AI.

"Art is Life": Distancing from Generative AI

Despite his participation in Refn's project, Kojima quickly distanced himself from the perception that he is a proponent of generative AI. In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Kojima doubled down on his skepticism toward machine-made creativity. He explained that true art requires a living human pulse, stating simply that "art is life,” as cited by The Gamer.

While he admitted that AI might eventually evolve enough to create something meaningful in fifty or a hundred years, he bluntly concluded that he does not expect to see it happen in his lifetime and has no interest in pursuing it. He added that society will eventually find a good path for how we use technology, and that it is really up to young people to shape that future.

This position aligns perfectly with Kojima's established history regarding technology at his studio, Kojima Productions. Back in December 2025, the director explicitly outlined a very narrow role for artificial intelligence in his development process. He stated he has absolutely no desire to use AI to generate visuals or artistic content. Instead, Kojima views the technology as a support tool rather than a creative authority.

Human Artistry Anchors 'OD' and 'Physint'

He expressed heavy interest in using AI control systems to improve in-game enemy behavior and make tactical encounters feel more organically responsive to individual player habits. While he acknowledges AI is an inevitable evolution akin to the adoption of the smartphone, he worries about algorithms unknowingly leading people down predetermined paths, reinforcing his belief that technology should always serve to enhance human-driven gameplay rather than replace artists.

Kojima's decisive public stance appears to be a direct response to the significant criticism surrounding his involvement in the Satellites II, firm public stance has been shaped by the overwhelmingly negative response to his appearance in Satellites II. Kojima is known for pushing the envelope, and many fans consider his games to be high art, making his engagement with AI-generated "slop" all the more heartbreaking for his most ardent supporters. Still, this controversy is unlikely to affect the massive excitement surrounding Kojima Productions' upcoming projects.

The studio is currently working on OD, a horror experience created in collaboration with director Jordan Peele for Xbox, and Physint, an espionage action game inspired by Metal Gear Solid in development for PlayStation.
