Highlights

  • Square Enix denied internet rumors that generative AI created the Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3 promotional artwork, blaming the anomalies on human error.
  • Fans previously flagged AI-like visual glitches in the key art, including Donald Duck having a five-fingered hand and missing crown details.
  • The $74.99 compilation launches on October 8 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.

Square Enix has officially shot down internet rumors claiming generative AI was used to create the promotional artwork for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3. Following weeks of intense speculation over strange visual glitches in the game's key art, the publisher stated the mistakes were simply the result of "human error" rather than machine generation. This definitive response arrives ahead of the massive compilation's highly anticipated October 8 launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.

The controversy kicked off shortly after the collection was first revealed during the June 9 Nintendo Direct broadcast. Eagle-eyed fans immediately noticed unnatural details in the promotional image that are heavily associated with AI image generation. The most glaring mistake was Donald Duck sporting a human-like, five-fingered hand instead of his traditional four fingers. Fans also spotted inconsistently sized chain links on Mickey Mouse’s Keyblade, warped hands on the Traverse Town clocktower, and the strange disappearance of the iconic crown patterns on both Sora’s chain belt and the soles of his shoes.

In a statement shared with GameSpot, a Square Enix representative addressed the growing backlash head-on. The company acknowledged that the artwork had noticeable issues but firmly refuted claims that artificial intelligence was used to create the assets, insisting the piece was fully crafted by their development team. Square Enix emphasized its commitment to quality and noted that updated versions of the artwork have since been rolled out.

Square Enix later rolled out revised promotional art in some listings, which obscured the disputed hand detail instead of uniformly fixing it across all materials. However, skeptical fans have pointed out that while the beloved mage is back to normal, other flaws, like the zipper on Sora's jacket going nowhere, remain, as per GameRant. Series artwork is traditionally attributed to Tetsuya Nomura, the franchise's director and lead character designer, making the initial visual errors all the more surprising for longtime fans.

What is included in the Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3?

Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3 is a $74.99 compilation, with physical and digital pre-orders now available across various retailers. Previously released as Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece on other platforms, this new bundle brings native, current-gen console ports of the beloved franchise to modern hardware. The collection includes heavy hitters like Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts 3 + ReMind, alongside HD cinematic movies covering the events of side games like Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

This incident highlights the gaming community's heightened scrutiny toward artificial intelligence in game development and marketing, even as companies continue to adopt the tech in other ways, such as Sony utilizing AI behind the scenes to prevent fraudulent transactions.

Despite the initial art hiccups, franchise fans still have plenty to be excited about. During the June reveal, Square Enix also showed off brand-new gameplay footage for Kingdom Hearts 4, confirming the highly anticipated sequel will launch simultaneously across multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2.

While a release window for Kingdom Hearts 4 remains a mystery, more news is just around the corner. Disney has confirmed a special "Kingdom Hearts: Deep Dive" panel will take place on August 15 at the D23 Expo to celebrate the franchise's upcoming 25th anniversary. Both Square Enix and Disney are keeping a tight lid on exactly what will be shown.

In the meantime, Square Enix continues to heavily support the Switch 2 hardware, having just launched the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 on the console on August 4, setting the stage to see how this new Kingdom Hearts collection will fare by comparison this October.
