- Ninja Theory announced Senua, an action-heavy Hellblade sequel arriving in 2027.
- The title features a deeper combat system, dual-wielding, and a world twice as large as the previous game.
- Senua will launch simultaneously on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5, ending past release fragmentation.
Xbox and Ninja Theory dropped a massive surprise over the weekend at the Xbox Games Showcase, officially announcing the third game in the acclaimed Hellblade series. Ditching the expected numbered sequel format, the new title is simply called Senua and is scheduled to launch in 2027. True to Microsoft's evolving multi-platform strategy, the highly anticipated game will not be restricted to a single ecosystem; it will be available simultaneously on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. Players will once again take control of the beloved Celtic warrior, but the experience awaiting them will be vastly different from her past journeys.
The new title marks a dramatic shift for the franchise, evolving from a tightly scripted, narrative-heavy experience into what Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews describes as an "out-and-out action-adventure game." Writing on the official Xbox Wire blog, Matthews explained that the team is taking a bold new step.
The goal is to retain the heart and soul of what Hellblade has always meant with intimate storytelling, high production values, and an intentional, emotional journey, while adding significantly more gameplay. Responding directly to player feedback, the studio aims to give fans the agency they have been asking for while easily meeting the expectations of hardcore action-adventure players.
Overhauled Gameplay Mechanics
To accommodate this robust new direction, the gameplay mechanics have been completely overhauled to offer a fairly even split between combat, traversal, and puzzle-solving. The deeper combat system now emphasizes tactical choice, allowing players to utilize stealth, throw items, and wield new weapons like short and long axes, as per VGC.
In a massive upgrade, Senua can now dual-wield and engage in visceral battles against multiple enemies at once. Additionally, she can unleash brand-new "Focus Abilities" including a reality-shattering skill that seamlessly integrate into both crowd control during frantic fights and environmental puzzle-solving.
This expanded gameplay is set within a significantly larger, interconnected world that is roughly twice the size of 2024's Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. Players will experience much faster, snappier movement mechanics that allow Senua to seamlessly vault, climb, and jump through the landscape.
Despite these significant mechanical changes, the story picks up immediately following the events of the first two games. Senua now finds herself trapped in Purgatory, which has manifested as a surreal, fractured vision of her childhood homeland. Caught between life and death, she is on a desperate quest to reach the afterlife and reunite with the loved ones she has lost.

Rapid Turnaround and Consolidating Talent
This new direction comes as a surprisingly rapid turnaround for the studio, signaling a welcome return to their action-heavy roots seen in past hits like DmC: Devil May Cry. Work on Senua actually began in September 2024, just a few months after shipping the critically acclaimed Hellblade 2.
By canceling another in-development title, Project Mara, Ninja Theory was able to consolidate its talent. Now, a dedicated team of around 85 creatives is entirely focused on this single vision, proving Xbox's continued commitment to delivering premier, high-quality single-player experiences. The decision to deepen the gameplay feels like a direct response to the reception of the previous installment. While both previous games were critically acclaimed, Hellblade 2 earned 11 nominations at the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards.
It ultimately walked away with just one win for Technical Achievement during a ceremony dominated by Astro Bot. With Senua, the franchise is finally poised to deliver that engaging experience to a completely unified audience. The series has had a historically fragmented release cycle: the 2017 original, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, began as a PS4 and PC exclusive before coming to Xbox One in 2018.
Following Microsoft's acquisition of Ninja Theory, the 2024 sequel reversed that trend, launching as an Xbox Series X/S and PC exclusive before eventually arriving on the PS5 in August 2025. Now, with a unified 2027 release across all major platforms, Senua's next great battle will be experienced by everyone at once.
