Highlights

  • Nintendo has asked manufacturers to produce 25 million Switch 2 units by March 2026, signaling record-breaking first-year ambitions.
  • Analysts say the company could sell around 20 million consoles this fiscal year, surpassing its initial forecast of 15 million.
  • The Switch 2’s launch sales have already exceeded the original Switch’s by over 75%, suggesting explosive demand in key markets.

Nintendo is ramping up production of the Switch 2, setting a target of 25 million units by the end of March 2026. The ambitious figure comes just four months after the console’s global release on June 5, 2025, and reflects confidence in continued strong demand during the critical holiday season. Nintendo’s suppliers have been asked to step up output, with the company expecting to outperform both investor guidance and its previous first-year record of 17.79 million units sold by the original Switch.

Nintendo is Experiencing Record Demand

According to a report by Bloomberg, Nintendo initially forecast 15 million console sales through fiscal year 2025–26, but analysts suggest that number will now exceed 20 million based on current market trends. In the U.S., the Switch 2 is tracking 77% ahead of the original Switch’s early sales. This surge follows Nintendo’s strategy of maintaining higher-than-usual launch inventory to avoid the supply shortages that plagued rival consoles from Microsoft and Sony during their release cycles.

During Nintendo’s latest earnings call, the company reported 8.67 million Switch 2 games sold alongside 24.4 million titles still being purchased for the original Switch hardware, underscoring cross-generation engagement. Releases like Pokémon Legends: Z-A are expected to extend that momentum through the holiday window. And unlike its predecessor, which launched near the end of a fiscal year, the Switch 2’s midyear debut gives it nine full months to drive record first-year results.

Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Nathan Naidu expects the 25 million production plan to result in Nintendo revising its official sales forecast upward by early 2026. “This reinforces our view that Nintendo’s 15-million-unit target was conservative,” he said, adding that the company’s ability to sustain supply could solidify its position as the fastest-selling console maker in history.

Despite trade concerns and potential tariff risks in the U.S., the Switch 2’s performance has vastly outpaced expectations in nearly every territory since launch. Should these momentum trends continue, the console may not only eclipse the original Switch’s groundbreaking 2017 debut but also set a new benchmark for first-year hardware sales across the entire games industry.
