Highlights

  • Funselektor Labs hit one million Steam wishlists and announced a closed playtest running from April 24–26.
  • The off-road sim features realistic physics, co-op survival, and a newly revealed Algeria biome trailer.
  • A 2026 PC release will be followed by launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Funselektor Labs, the studio behind the remarkably good and incredibly stylish indie hit Art of Rally, has another massive success brewing. Developed in collaboration with Strelka Games, their upcoming off-road exploration game, Over the Hill, has already soared past one million wishlists on Steam. To celebrate this huge community milestone, the developers are giving eager fans a chance to hit the rugged trails early with a closed playtest running from April 24 through April 26. It is a fantastic opportunity to play early and provide feedback, but players must act fast to secure their spot. Registrations officially opened on April 9 and will close on April 16 via Funselektor's official website.

Rather than a traditional high-speed racer, Over the Hill gives off-road exploration a spin by trading the finish line for a relaxing yet challenging wilderness adventure. It shares its DNA with driving simulators like MudRunner and SnowRunner, where players must overcome thick mud, snow, rushing rivers, and steep rocks. The gameplay invites drivers to navigate these real-world-inspired biomes using a variety of iconic vehicles and tools from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Instead of relying on a mini-map, you must use realistic off-roading physics, traditional maps, and compasses to survive. It is a vibe, more than anything, emphasizing solo survival or seamless drop-in co-op where you can team up with friends to set up campsites and gather valuable resources.

Unveiling the Sprawling Algeria Biome

Alongside the exciting playtest news, a brand-new trailer debuted at the recent Triple-i Initiative Showcase, giving players a first look at the game's stunning Algeria biome. Inspired by real-world locations, this sprawling, sandy region promises massive plateaus where drivers can discover hidden routes and breathtaking locales.

"After having developed several games about motorsport, we wanted to go off-track by offering players a vast world to lose themselves at a slower pace," said Funselektor founder Dune Casu, as per EuroGamer. Players will find themselves exploring sand-swept valleys, mysterious ancient ruins, and even fallen meteorites.

By completing these environmental tasks and exploring the unknown, groups can discover strange portals leading to entirely new areas, unlocking new vehicles, essential mechanical upgrades, and cosmetic items for their kit.

While Over the Hill does not have a firm launch day outside of a 2026 window, the massive surge in wishlists clearly highlights a strong demand for more grounded, indie exploration titles in the gaming community. It is officially scheduled to release first on PC via Steam, but console players will not be left in the dust.

The development team has confirmed that a console version will launch at some point after its PC debut, with planned releases for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
