Highlights

  • PlayStation 5 has sold over 84M units worldwide, beating Xbox 360's lifetime sales and far surpassing Xbox One figures.
  • Recent quarter sales hit 3.9M units, showing sustained demand nearly five years post-launch.
  • Software sales continue to climb with major exclusives and a dominant shift toward digital purchases.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has sold over 84M units globally since its launch in 2020, marking it as one of the most successful consoles in recent history. The console continues its momentum with more than 3.9M units sold in the latest quarter alone, showcasing sustained demand despite a premium price point and increased competition in the market.

PS5 Outpaces Xbox 360 and Xbox One Lifetime Sales

According to Sony’s financial report, PS5 lifetime sales of 84.2M units now surpass the Xbox 360’s total of approximately 84M units and significantly exceed the Xbox One’s 53M units sold as last reported. The remaining question around whether these figures include PS5 Pro sales remains unanswered, but the existing data highlights Sony’s dominance in the current console generation.

Key titles such as Ghost of Yotei (3.3M copies sold since October 2025), God of War: Ragnarok, and Astro Bot have resonated strongly with both critics and gamers, driving software sales on the platform. The rise in digital purchases is notable; around 72% of game sales in Q2 2025 were digital downloads, indicating a shift in consumer preference toward online platforms and services.

Additionally, PlayStation Online boasts over 119M monthly active users, reflecting the platform’s strong multiplayer and subscription engagement. Sony’s continued investment in exclusive, high-quality content, combined with loyal fan support, underpins the PS5’s impressive lifetime sales trajectory.

Sony’s robust lineup, including anticipated releases like Saros, Marvel’s Wolverine, and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, promises to maintain gamer interest and support sales growth in the coming years.
