Highlights

  • A John Wick game from Saber Interactive was officially revealed at Sony's newest State of Play.
  • Keanu Reeves returns for a prequel story featuring signature "gun-fu" action.
  • The State of Play trailer showcased high-fidelity combat coming to PS5, Xbox, and PC

PlayStation’s first big State of Play for the year had plenty of announcements, but the night belonged to God of War and John Wick.  January may have been a bit of a dry period for gaming, but we're finally starting to see some big and exciting things.

In a show-stopping reveal, Lionsgate and Saber Interactive officially announced a new AAA video game based on the billion-dollar John Wick franchise. The game is a high-fidelity, single-player action title that finally brings the series’ signature "gun-fu" to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Studio CEO Matthew Karch confirmed they are building a custom combat system from the ground up to blend shooting and martial arts seamlessly.

Keanu Reeves, Authentic Combat, and Prequel Story Details

Tonight's State of Play had a lot to unpack, but the most surprising moment was the John Wick game trailer opening within the iconic Continental hotel.

To ensure authenticity, the project features heavy involvement from the original creative team, including franchise director Chad Stahelski. The goal is to translate the high-octane rhythm of the movies into player-controlled chaos. Keanu Reeves is also confirmed to be lending both his voice and likeness to the character, grounding the digital experience in the actor's legendary performance.

From what we've seen so far, it's looking pretty stellar. A brief gameplay segment captured on PS5 demonstrated the game’s fidelity to the movies’ brutal choreography. The footage showcased Wick engaging in fluid hand-to-hand combat in tight spaces and seamlessly transitioning from melee attacks to precise gunplay, as reported by Gamer.

The trailer highlighted the environmental interactivity fans love, showing Wick ramming enemies into display cases and even utilizing chopsticks as an improvised weapon. The developers have stated the game is tailored for mature audiences, maintaining the gritty, neo-noir aesthetic fans have expected since the series debut in 2014.

Narratively, the game will carve out a unique space within the canon rather than retelling the movies. The story serves as a prequel set years before the "Impossible Task" that originally allowed Wick to retire. This setting offers a chance to expand on the deep lore of the High Table and the Continental, mixing familiar faces with new characters.

While no release date was shared, this announcement marks the franchise’s most ambitious leap into gaming yet. With a dry start to 2026, this reveal suggests that PlayStation's year is about to get a lot more exciting.
