Square Enix Reports Over 90% of Game Sales Are Digital

Square Enix’s digital-heavy sales raise new questions about physical editions for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

Highlights

  • Square Enix’s digital game sales reached 90.1%, with 6.65M downloads out of 7.38M units sold in Q1 FY27.
  • Net sales rose to ¥78.4B (~$492M USD), while operating income increased to ¥17B (~$107M) YoY.
  • Final Fantasy 7 Revelation could retain a physical edition as Square Enix’s game sales shift further toward digital.

Square Enix sold 7.38M game units during the first quarter (Q1) of fiscal year 2027 (FY27), but only 730K came from packaged releases. Downloads accounted for 6.65M units, giving digital sales a 90.1% share between April 1 and June 30, 2026.

The sales mix coincided with a stronger quarter for Square Enix. Net sales increased to ¥78.4 billion (~$492M USD) from ¥59.2B (~$372M) a year earlier, while operating income climbed to ¥17B (~$107M) from ¥9B (~$56.4M). Digital entertainment accounted for ¥49.9B (~$313M) of revenue, compared with ¥32.9B (~$207M) in the same period last year.

Square Enix’s game business gains from new releases

HD Games generated ¥17.7B (~$111M) in net sales, a ¥8.8B (~$55M) year-over-year (YoY) increase, while operating income reached ¥6.1B (~$38.2M). Square Enix attributed the growth to stronger performances from new and catalog titles.

The MMO business also improved.

Revenue rose to ¥12.7B (~$80M) from ¥9.6B (~$60M) after player activity increased following the announcement of the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion, Evercold. Operating income remained at ¥3.6B (~$23M) because of costs recognized ahead of the expansion's planned early 2027 launch. Smart devices and PC browser revenue increased to ¥19.4B (~$122M) from ¥14.3B (~$90M).

The company has also scheduled several Nintendo Switch 2 releases between July and December 2026, including both digital and physical editions. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster launched digitally on July 23, 2026, while its physical edition is scheduled for release on August 27.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation could preserve physical games

Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth used multiple discs, giving physical buyers a more complete version of each game than releases that require substantial downloads after purchase. The supplied material also notes similar digital shifts at Capcom and Sony, while GTA 6 represents another example of publishers exploring packaged products without conventional game discs.

That question is particularly relevant to the remake series.

The digital-heavy results also put attention on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Square Enix has yet to determine the game's complete product lineup, while Revelation director, Naoki Hamaguchi, told GamesRadar+ that he is working toward retaining a physical option.

Hamaguchi acknowledged that downloads are becoming more common but said packaged alternatives could remain, including boxes containing download codes, Nintendo Switch 2 key cards, or boot discs. The final choice will depend partly on platform requirements and storage limits.

With digital purchases already making up more than nine out of every 10 Square Enix game units sold, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation could show how much room remains for physical releases aimed at collectors.
