Highlights

  • Mobile puzzle games pulled in $4.9B USD in net player spending during H1 2026, capturing over 44% of casual gaming revenue.
  • Match-3 games dominated earnings with $2.5B, led by strong growth from Royal Kingdom and enduring giants like Candy Crush Saga and Royal Match.
  • Merge games emerged as the fastest-growing subgenre, surging 74% year-over-year to $127M net fueled by top performers like Gossip Harbor.

Puzzle games are proving to be a massive financial success in the mobile gaming world, pulling in a staggering $4.9 billion USD in net player spending during the first half of 2026. According to the AppMagic Casual Games Report H1 2026, puzzle games captured more than 44% of all player spending within the casual mobile genre, even as the broader mobile and casual markets remained mostly flat or dipped slightly. Globally, the genre climbed to second place across all mobile gaming genres.

The extraordinary revenue is heavily anchored by two major subgenres. Out of the $4.9B in net player spending, match-3 games led the charge by bringing in $2.5B, which accounts for 51% of all puzzle earnings. While this segment saw a slight year-over-year decline of less than 1%, its downloads grew by 10%. Established heavyweights like Royal Match, Candy Crush Saga, Royal Kingdom, and Gardenscapes powered this majority share.

Notably, Royal Kingdom saw the strongest growth rate among the top 10 match-3 games, surging by 188% and has been outperforming Royal Match compared to its global launch. While Royal Match remains on top and Candy Crush Saga ranked second in H1, AppMagic speculates that Royal Kingdom could soon overtake Candy Crush, giving developer Dream Games the two most lucrative match-3 games. Additionally, newcomers like Good Job Games' Match Villains climbed to 11th place.

Merge-Style Games Emerge as a Fast-Growing Secondary Engine

Meanwhile, merge games emerged as a powerful secondary growth engine and the fastest-growing among the big genres. Merge games made $1.3B in H1 2026, shooting up 74% year-over-year as downloads grew by 24%. AppMagic noted that monetization is the greatest strength of this segment, with player spending growing faster than downloads as publishers like Century Games and Moon Active double down on merge-2, as per Pocketgamer.biz.

Microfun’s Gossip Harbor has been the top performer since October 2024, surpassing $100M in net monthly earnings for the first time in March 2026 and bringing in more than half a billion overall during H1. Century Games’ Tasty Travels also climbed from seventh place to second, earning $127M net in the first six months of the year, largely fueled by heavy user acquisition.

Despite this booming financial success, breaking into the category is becoming increasingly difficult for new developers. AppMagic data reveals a success rate of just 0.8% for newly launched match-3 apps, meaning only one out of 120 new games launched in the first half of the year managed to reach $100,000 in monthly revenue even once.

As the report points out, matching today's strict genre standards is tough even for industry giants and even harder for newcomers. Because of this high barrier to entry, industry analysts expect major publishers to keep pouring heavy investments into user acquisition for existing category leaders as they fight for market share through the remainder of 2026.
