Valve to Stop Restocking Steam Gift Cards in Stores
Valve confirms no restocking of physical Steam gift cards across retail stores.
Highlights
- Valve will stop restocking physical Steam gift cards, with a full retail phase-out expected by the end of 2026.
- The decision follows ongoing scam activity that persists despite years of anti-fraud measures by the company.
- Digital Steam gift cards will remain available.
Valve has confirmed it will stop restocking physical Steam gift cards at retail stores, initiating a gradual wind-down that is expected to fully conclude by the end of 2026. Once existing inventory is sold through, physical cards will no longer be available in stores. This will leave only digital Steam gift cards as the remaining option for gifting funds on Steam.
The update was published in an amended Steam Support frequently asked questions (FAQ) and surfaced after users on Reddit flagged the change.
The company’s FAQ now states that a retail purchase is still possible, “but only for a limited time,” while also confirming that no further retail restocks will occur once the current supply runs out. Valve added that users will still be able to redeem any physical cards already in circulation, subject to local laws, even after retail distribution ends.
Why is Valve Ending Physical Steam Gift Cards?
Valve attributes the decision to persistent scam activity that has continued despite years of countermeasures. The company stated it has worked with retailers and law enforcement, introduced prominent scam warnings on cards, restricted redemption of Steam Wallet currency, and limited retail availability over time. These steps were intended to reduce misuse but have not eliminated the problem.
Valve noted that “scammers have adapted,” continuing to exploit gift cards as a fraud mechanism affecting Steam users and others. The company also notes that it began offering physical Steam gift cards in 2012 and introduced digital gift cards in 2017, the latter of which will now serve as the primary gifting channel moving forward.
Digital gifting options, including guest checkout, will continue without disruption.
The shift aligns with broader fraud warnings issued by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has repeatedly highlighted gift card scams where victims are pressured into sharing codes. By phasing out retail distribution, Valve is removing a channel often targeted in such schemes while maintaining digital Steam Wallet functionality for purchases and gifting within the Steam ecosystem.
