Highlights

  • Where Winds Meet hit $223.7M in lifetime mobile revenue, led by massive success in China and a strong global rollout.
  • New Imperial Palace content and expert combat design have spiked player engagement and spending.
  • The free-to-play title highlights the ongoing dominance of Asian developers in the global mobile market.

NetEase’s breathtaking open-world martial arts RPG, Where Winds Meet, is proving to be a massive financial hit. Over the six months since its global mobile rollout on December 12, 2025, the game has pulled in an impressive $94.2 million USD. When combined with the revenue generated during its earlier exclusivity period in its home country, the game's lifetime mobile earnings have now soared past a staggering $223.7M.

While the game has firmly planted its feet on the international stage, generating $22.1M from mobile players outside of China over the last half-year, its homeland remains its most powerful financial engine. According to data from AppMagic, Chinese players have spent $72.1M since the global launch, accounting for 77% of the game's recent mobile revenue. The United States stands as the largest overseas market, bringing in $8.6M to make up 9% of the global total. South Korea ranks third, contributing $1.9M or 2%.

This heavy swing toward Chinese spending makes perfect sense to industry experts. Not only did players in the region get nearly a year of early access to build a dedicated community, but the game is also deeply rooted in the nation's history. Set in 10th-century China, the world is steeped in traditional culture, authentic weaponry, and stunning martial arts that naturally resonate with the domestic audience.

Still, its broader appeal is undeniable. Following a massive multi-platform launch across PC and PlayStation 5 on November 14, 2025, and mobile a month later, the game drew in over 15M players across all platforms in its first month alone.

Imperial Palace Expansion Drives Massive Engagement

The momentum hasn't slowed down, thanks to continuous, expansive updates from developer Everstone Studio. On May 28, the game saw a massive engagement boost with the release of 1.7 version update outside of China, as per Pocketgamer.biz.

This patch introduced the sprawling Imperial Palace expansion, adding a one-million-square-meter royal court packed with over 3,000 non-playable characters to set a fresh stage for the next narrative arc. The community's excitement translated directly into sales, with daily player spending surging by 50% to hit $169,000 on the day the update dropped.

To ensure the action remains as authentic and cinematic as the setting, the developers have brought on legendary action director Yuen Woo-ping as the game's global action consultant. Famed for his groundbreaking choreography in The Matrix, Kill Bill, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, his involvement elevates the game's combat to new heights.

This dedication to quality pairs well with the game's player-friendly business model. Operating as a free-to-play experience, Where Winds Meet avoids aggressive "pay-to-win" mechanics, relying instead on character cosmetics as its primary source of income.

Right now, players can dive into the six-month global anniversary celebrations. Until June 17, fans can claim a special Panda costume—honoring China's native national animal—designed to raise awareness for wildlife protection.

It is a fitting milestone for NetEase and Everstone Studio, perfectly highlighting a broader industry trend where Asian developers continue to dominate the global games market. In 2025 alone, studios in Asia developed eight of the ten most lucrative new mobile games in the world, cementing their position as the driving force of the industry's future.
