Bandai Namco Reveals Echoes of Aincrad Bonus Anime Preview

Bandai Namco has released a preview for Unanswered//butterfly, a new special anime bundled with the Ultimate and Premium Editions of Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad. In a separate television commercial released the same day, the studio revealed the game's theme song, Live to Survive, performed by Aimer.

The Unanswered//butterfly anime is exclusively tied to these editions, with Premium offering PS5-only Blu-ray cut. It is a 110-minute-long anime, positioned as advertising material for Echoes of Aincrad, with Bandai Namco planning to screen or stream it for promotional purposes.

Echoes of Aincrad is launching with four editions: Aincrad, Ultimate, Deluxe, and Standard, on July 10. The Ultimate Edition further bundles the Unanswered//butterfly anime together with every Deluxe pack bonus, alongside extra rewards such as an in-game armor pack, digital artbook, and soundtrack.

What is Unanswered//butterfly in SAO: Echoes of Aincrad?

Unanswered//butterfly follows two original Sword Art Online (SAO) characters, Emirun and Rex, reuniting in the virtual world of the game. It is positioned as a revenge story, where both Rex and Emirun try to find Asuna and avenge their comrades, who died at the hands of a ‘Player Killer’ (Black Swordsman).

The film is produced by Polygon Pictures, the Emmy Award-winning 3DCG studio behind Transformers Prime. Tadahiro Yoshihira, whose credits include Star Wars: Visions Vol. 3 The Bird of Paradise, is directing Unanswered//butterfly while Keisuke Makino, known for scripting Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut, wrote the screenplay.

Emirun and her male counterpart, Rex, are voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa and Koki Uchiyama, respectively. A manga adaptation of the Unanswered//butterfly story began serialization in Weekly Famitsu from March 26, 2026.

Despite the production scale, Bandai Namco has positioned the Unanswered//butterfly anime movie as promotional material. SAO Game Series Producer Yosuke Futami also previously stated that prior franchise knowledge would not be necessary for playing the game.

With the exclusive content bundle strategy and multiple editions at launch, Bandai Namco is aiming to maximize the profit from its latest SAO title. Echoes of Aincrad is a single-player action RPG that will launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in July 2026.
