Code Geass Franchise Expands Into Live Theatre With New Musical
As part of its 20th-anniversary campaign, ‘Lelouch of the Rebellion’ anime is getting a new musical in Jan. 2026
Highlights
- Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion expands into live theatre with a new 2026 musical sequel, as a part of its 20th-year campaign.
- Returning actors Koji Konami, Ryotaro Akazawa, and Ayana Kinoshita will reprise their roles under director Daisuke Nishida.
- The project reflects a strategic revival of the Code Geass franchise, tapping into the rising trend of anime-to-stage “2.5D” musicals.
The long-running anime franchise Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is set to debut a new stage musical in Jan. 2026, signaling a live-theatre extension of the IP after its previous successful stage musical. The production, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - A Knight who Follows His Beliefs 2, is slated to debut on Jan. 23 at Cool Japan Park Osaka TT Hall.
The new stage play adaptation is a direct sequel to the previous stage musical instalment, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, released in 2023. The creative team also revealed that returning cast members, Kōji Konami (Lelouch Lamperouge), Ryōtarō Akazawa (Suzaku Kururugi), and Ayana Kinoshita (Euphemia li Britannia) will join the production.
Originating in 2006, Code Geass has matured into a multimedia franchise encompassing TV series, films, and spin-offs. The production is a part of the franchise's 20th anniversary celebration, which also includes various live events under the "Road to CODE GEASS 20th Year" banner and a screening of 13 films from Jan. to June 2026.
Production Details and Revival Strategy
The Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion - A Knight who Follows His Beliefs 2 will also be screened in Tokyo after debuting in Osaka. The Osaka production will run from Jan. 23-25, 2026 (four shows), followed by performances at Tokyo from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1, 2026 (seven shows).
The stage musical is under the supervision of Studio Sunrise, the animation studio behind the original animated series. Daisuke Nishida is directing the play, while Sho Kubota will supervise the script and lyrics. Apart from the returning actors, some notable new cast members include Rina Koyama (C.C.), Saori Otaki (Kallen Kozuki), and Ami Kiuchi (Cornelia li Britannia).
To make the performance available for everyone, organizers have introduced tiered ticket packaging. VIP seats and S-seats, which come with non-sale merchandise, cost ¥16,800 ($110) and ¥13,000 ($85), respectively. The regular A-seats are priced at ¥9,800 ($64).
The forthcoming stage musical of Code Geass is a calculated play in a broader franchise revival and live-experience pivot. Anime live-theater adaptations, sometimes referred to as "2.5D musicals," have grown to be a thriving subsector. The stage musical production aligning with the anniversary release shows that the franchise is aiming for a large-scale, well-funded theatrical performance, rather than merely a nostalgic staging to revive the Code Geass IP.
