A crowdfunding campaign for the Netflix anime film Cosmic Princess Kaguya! has closed on April 22, with a final funding rate of 4,057%, surpassing its original target. The campaign, which ran on the Japanese crowdfunding platform Soreosu, was launched to fund a virtual fan event called the "Tsukuyomi Thanksgiving Festival," centered on recreating the film's virtual world within the social VR platform VRChat.
The campaign, launched on Feb 22, hit its baseline funding target within one hour and 140% of the aimed amount in a day. Over approximately two months, the cumulative collection reached 4,057% of the original goal. The project used an "all-in" model, meaning funds were collected regardless of whether the initial target was met, with additional content unlocked as backing grew.
Initially, the Tsukuyomi Thanksgiving Festival was designed to create a virtual world inspired by Cosmic Princess Kaguya! anime movies for fans. Among the new initiatives, organizers have confirmed 3D character models of Kaguya, Yachiyo, and Iroha and 3D production of the Black Onyx members.
There will be newly added mini-performances, such as a newly written voice drama, live mini-performances within the virtual Tsukuyomi world, and character appearances in costumes from the film's ending theme music video. Backers will receive exclusive rewards and regular production updates via email starting in May.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Success: From Streaming to Theaters to Virtual Worlds
The crowdfunding result follows the film's commercial significance since its debut on Netflix on Jan 22, 2026. Cosmic Princess Kaguya! debuted at seventh place on Netflix's weekly ranking of non-English films and reached first place in Japan's top films list the next day.
The streaming success paved the movie’s way towards the theatre, starting from Feb 20. Despite limited screening in 19 theatres, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! generated ¥291.22 million (~$1.8 million USD) within four days of release. The film eventually grossed over ¥2.038B (~$12M) at the Japanese box office, by April 19.
The movie is based on the Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, however, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! anime movie reimagines the classic story with a modern narrative. The VR initiative has already shown success. During the Sanrio Virtual Festival in February 2026, a concert performance by the film's character Kaguya, helped VRChat break its all-time concurrent user record, drawing 156,716 users.
Furthermore, the 4,000% crowdfunding surge behind Cosmic Princess Kaguya! underscores how anime post-launch engagement strategy is using experimental models rather than relying solely on merchandise or physical media. Initiatives like this test audience depth, reduce financial risk on experimental formats, and work as a marketing campaign.
