GKIDS Brings Tekkonkinkreet 4K Remaster to N. American Theaters
The 2006 Studio 4°C cult classic returns for a two-night theatrical run on May 31 and June 1, with a 4K UHD home release to follow later this year.
Highlights
- Tekkonkinkreet returns to North American theaters in a new 4K remaster for a limited two-night screening.
- Produced by Studio 4°C, the cult classic remains celebrated for its experimental visuals and mature storytelling.
- GKIDS continues expanding the market for restored anime classics, testing audience demand beyond Studio Ghibli titles.
GKIDS will bring a new 4K remastered version of Tekkonkinkreet to North American theaters for a limited-time run on May 31- June 1, marking the anime film’s 20th anniversary. The screenings will be presented in both the original Japanese with subtitles and in English dub.
The company announced the acquisition on May 7, confirming the restored version of director Michael Arias’ 2006 film debut in U.S. and Canadian theaters. A 4K UHD Blu-ray and digital download of the Tekkonkinkreet remaster are also set for release later this year.
The acquisition follows GKIDS pattern of bringing 4K restorations of cult animated features in North American theaters. The company partnered with IMAX to bring multiple Studio Ghibli films throughout 2026, a strategy that gained traction after the 4K remaster of Princess Mononoke became the second-highest-grossing vault release ever for IMAX, with $10M revenue from rerelease
Tekkonkinkreet Movie's Plot and Production
Produced by Studio 4°C and distributed by Sony in Japan, Tekkonkinkreet earned critical acclaim for blending CG-animation with hand-drawn aesthetics and experimental, mature storytelling. Tekkonkinkreet won Animation of the Year at the 2008 Japan Academy Film Prize.
Tekkonkinkreet centers on two orphaned street kids, Black and White, who patrol the slums of Treasure Town and live a quiet life until gangsters threaten to destroy the city to build a theme park. The movie features themes of poverty, organized crime, and industrial terror with a coming-of-age narrative, as the pair face yakuza, assassins, and their own darkness.
GKIDS President David Jestead positioned Tekkonkinkreet as one of his favorite anime movies with an “extraordinary design and animation work” that moved beyond its time.
Other than thematic and technical genius, Tekkonkinkreet also marked a milestone for international anime production talent. Arias became one of the first non-Japanese directors to direct a critically acclaimed anime feature inside Japan, with Anthony Weintraub, known for The Capote, writing the screenplay.
Barbara London, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) curator, later called Tekkonkinkreet the best film of 2006 in her Artforum roundup. With anime theatrical revenue demonstrating consistent growth in the North American region, with Tekkonkinkreet's remaster, GKIDS can test the appetite for non-Ghibli anime classics in the region.
