Highlights

  • Mobile Suit Gundam became Bandai Namco’s top-earning IP in FY2026, surpassing Dragon Ball and One Piece with strong revenue growth.
  • The franchise’s success was driven by merchandise, games, films, and global licensing under Bandai Namco’s IP strategy.
  • Rising demand for Gunpla kits, mobile games, and international expansion highlights Gundam IP’s evolution into a commercial engine.

Mobile Suit Gundam franchise saw a 65.67% year-over-year growth, with sales of ¥254.3B (~$1.62B), for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. The franchise finished the year as Bandai Namco's top-performing IP by revenue, ahead of both Dragon Ball and One Piece for the first time in recent reporting history.

Bandai Namco Holdings recorded a 8.6% YoY increase with a consolidated net sales of ¥1.348T (~$8.59B). The strong performance across its Toys and Hobby segment, which was up 12.9% YoY, was particularly due to Gundam-related products and overseas demand.

Bandai Namco’s Toys and Hobby segment led all divisions with full-year sales of ¥673.9B (~$4.26B), while the operating profit rose to ¥126.93B (~$803.50M) with 18.8% margin.

Gundam Sales FY2026: What Drove the Surge

The FY2026 earnings show how the Gundam franchise has evolved from a legacy anime into a diversified global merchandise and licensing business. Originally launched in 1979, the franchise has been expanded across theatrical films, streaming anime, gaming, apparel collaborations, entertainment facilities, and retail-focused hobby products.

Due to its demand, Bandai Namco previously revised its Gundam revenue forecast to $1.5B, a 40% increase from its earlier estimation. However, the current Gundam sales of approximately $1.62B have surpassed that projection as well.

While Bandai Namco is yet to announce which specific areas contributed to Gundam franchise sales, it can be surmised that the IP performed strongly across Digital, Toys-Hobby, Amusement, and Music segments.

In February, the company attributed Gundam’s growth to Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. The theatrical release contributed to box-office revenue, global streaming income, and licensing fees across the Visual and Music segment. Back then, the company highlighted a sales surge in the Toys and Hobby Unit and Amusement machines as well.

Bandai’s high-end Gunpla model kits and collectible figures drive recurring Toys and Hobby demand. The company reissued the fan-favorite Gundam MG 1/100 GM Sniper II (White Dingo Team Custom) model in December 2025 as well. The mobile game SD Gundam G Generation Eternal, launched on April 16, 2025, crossed $200M in global revenue within its first five months.

In July 2025, the Gundam Card Game expanded to 54 new countries and regions, broadening the franchise's retail footprint beyond its traditional Japanese base. Together, these moves reflect Bandai Namco's stated IP-axis strategy, which eventually contributed to Gundam IP revenue across segments.
