Netflix has officially confirmed the production of its first live-action Gundam movie in Queensland, Australia, marking a significant milestone for Bandai Namco's flagship franchise. The project, first announced in 2018, has now finally entered active development with a new cast attached.
The film is being produced in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Entertainment, underscoring a cross-market collaboration aimed at global audiences. Director Jim Mickle, known for Netflix's Sweet Tooth series, will helm the adaptation starring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo in lead roles, possibly as rival mech pilots.
The production is the first theatrical live-action adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam, which debuted in 1979 as one of the pioneers of the ‘real robot' subgenre of mecha anime. A Canadian television film titled G-Saviour aired in 1999 but never received wide distribution.
Production Gains Clarity as Netflix Confirms Live-Action Gundam Movie
Mickle also serves as producer alongside his partner Linda Moran through their Nightshade production company. Actors Sweeney and Centineo serve as producers along with Enzo Marc, Cale Boyter, and Ali Mendes.
The live-action Gundam movie will be executive-produced by Naohiro Ogata, Matthew Jenkins, and Makoto Asanuma. The Netflix announcement also detailed an 11-actor cast list, with credits including recent hits such as Deadpool & Wolverine, The White Lotus, and Dune: Part Three.
The ensemble cast features Jackson White, Nonso Anozie, Javon Walton, Jason Isaacs, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, and Gemma Chua-Tran. It also includes Shioli Kutsuna, known for Deadpool & Wolverine, Michael Mando from Better Call Saul, and Ida Brooke, who plays Ghanima in the upcoming Dune: Part Three.
What's the Plot of Gundam Live-Action Movie?
The Gundam live-action's premise aligns with Gundam's core thematic focus on military conflict, political complexity, and human cost within large-scale mecha warfare. Netflix states that the movie’s plot centers on a war between Earth and its former space colonies, positioning combatants on opposing sides whose shifting loyalties escalate toward a conflict that could determine humanity's future.
The streamer is positioning the upcoming Gundam movie as a “brand-new story” based on the Gundam franchise. “With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before,” Netflix stated.
Netflix's Gundam adaptation arrives amidst accelerating industry momentum for anime-to-live-action projects. As of now, Netflix hasn’t detailed any theatre distribution or possible release dates for the live-action Gundam movie. The project follows similar adaptations, such as One Piece live-action, which demonstrated that anime-to-live-action transitions can achieve global traction.
