The race for India's digital future just hit a new gear. In a massive endorsement of the country's tech trajectory, Amazon has announced a staggering committed investment of more than $35 billion USD across its India operations by 2030. Unveiled on Wednesday at the Amazon Smbhav Summit in New Delhi, this Amazon investment in India is not just about expanding warehouses; it is a laser-focused push into cloud computing infrastructure and the democratization of artificial intelligence.
This fresh capital infusion comes on top of the nearly $40B the tech giant has already poured into the country so far. Amazon plans to equip 15 million small businesses with advanced AI tools such as "Seller Assistant" and "Next Gen Selling" to streamline their operations. For consumers, the company is rolling out innovations designed to bridge literacy gaps and enhance convenience.
These include "Lens AI" for visual search, "Rufus" for conversational shopping, and new multilingual interfaces that make digital commerce accessible to hundreds of millions of users.
The economic ripple effects of this move are projected to be substantial. By 2030, this new phase of the Amazon investment in India aims to generate 1 million new jobs. These opportunities will not be limited to corporate offices; they will span across direct, indirect, induced, and seasonal roles, driven by massive expansions in fulfillment centers, as well as last-mile delivery networks, and core operations.
Furthermore, Amazon has set an aggressive target for international trade, aiming to quadruple cumulative exports from Indian sellers to $80B by 2030, a significant leap from the current $20B. The goal is to utilize AI to help local sellers navigate international logistics and market demands, positioning India as a major global sourcing hub.

Infrastructure Growth and Social Commitment
This announcement lands at a critical time when hyperscalers are racing to secure a foothold in one of the world's fastest-growing digital economies. According to Deepika Giri, IDC’s regional head of research for big data & AI, India is currently one of the fastest-growing regions for AI spending in the Asia Pacific. She noted that a major gap, and therefore a significant opportunity, lies in the shortage of suitable compute infrastructure for running AI models. As countries accelerate efforts to build "sovereign AI" capabilities due to trade tensions, infrastructure has become the central pillar of growth.
The scale of this commitment highlights the intense competition for India's digital landscape. It comes shortly after Microsoft pledged $17.5B and Google committed $15B to similar causes. However, Amazon's focus extends beyond just infrastructure; it includes a deep social commitment. The company has pledged to support 4 million government school students with AI-focused education, aligning its efforts with India's National Education Policy 2020.
Amit Agarwal, Amazon's SVP for Emerging Markets, described the move as a continuation of a 15-year journey fuelling India's digital rise. "We are humbled to have been a part of India’s digital transformation journey," Agarwal said. "Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue being a catalyst for India’s growth, as we democratize access to AI for millions of Indians."
