Kaiju No. 8 Spinoff Narumi's Week at Work Sets September Debut

The Kaiju No. 8 franchise is expanding with a new short anime series, Narumi’s Week at Work, set to premiere on Sep 5, 2026. A trailer released on Aug 5, 2026, gave a glimpse of the new short based on the life of First Division captain Gen Narumi.

Narumi’s Week at Work is an original spin-off, separate from the mainline Kaiju No. 8 TV anime. Instead of adapting Naoya Matsumoto’s original manga, it features a four-episode original story by Kizuku Watanabe, creator of Kaiju No.8 RELAX spin-off manga. 

Kaiju No. 8: Narumi’s Week at Work continues the production’s strategy of releasing side stories between major installments, following Hoshina's Day Off, which premiered before Kaiju No. 8 season 2. Released on Kafka Hibino's birthday, the new trailer was accompanied by a new birthday special illustration of the franchise's protagonist.

Narumi's Week at Work Spotlights Japan's Strongest Defender

Instead of battlefield action, Narumi's Week at Work follows Gen Narumi through his responsibilities as captain of the Defense Force’s First Division. Despite his reputation as Japan’s strongest anti-kaiju combatant, Narumi routinely skips meetings, avoids paperwork, and spends his free time playing online games. 

The official synopsis teases that in Narumi's Week at Work short series, his carefree routine is interrupted by unexpected challenges, showcasing his less-peaceful worklife. Kōki Uchiyama reprises his role as Gen Narumi, with the short continuing the core production team behind the TV anime. 

Shigeyuki Miya directs, with Tetsuya Nishio serving as character designer and chief animation director. Production I.G is handling animation again, with kaiju designs credited to Mahiro Maeda and Studio Khara.

Where to Watch Narumi’s Week at Work?

Narumi's Week at Work will debut on the TOHO animation YouTube channel to watch for free. The four-episode short will run weekly on Saturdays at 8 pm JST.

Crunchyroll will also stream it in territories where the platform carries the Kaiju No. 8 anime. Following the Sep 5 debut, new installments will drop on Sep 12, 19, and 26, respectively. 

Kaiju No. 8’s Narumi's Week at Work project precedes the mainline anime’s upcoming third season, which was confirmed as the show’s ‘Final Chapter’ at Jump Festa 2026 in December. The short was announced at the same event and now becomes the franchise’s next release, while the final season remains in production without a tentative release window. 

As Kaiju No. 8 awaits the third season, Narumi's Week at Work gives the franchise room to expand its narrative beyond large-scale kaiju battles. By focusing on one of its most popular supporting characters, the short series keeps momentum and visibility between major story arcs.
