Highlights

  • MAPPA expands beyond action anime with three new projects: Fall in Love, You False Angels, BEAT & MOTION, and JIMOTO SAIKO!.
  • Netflix strengthens its partnership with MAPPA through exclusive global distribution of two new anime.
  • The new varied lineup signals MAPPA’s continued effort to balance blockbuster shonen franchises with diverse stories.

MAPPA used its 15th anniversary livestream from June 19 to unveil three new anime adaptations that broadened the studio’s portfolio beyond the action-heavy franchises. The studio released trailers for these three confirmed titles: Fall in Love, You False Angels, BEAT & MOTION, and JIMOTO SAIKO!.

Two of MAPPA’s three new titles, JIMOTO SAIKO! and BEAT & MOTION, will stream exclusively on Netflix, extending a global co-production deal the two companies struck in January 2026. Additionally, the studio also unveiled a new trailer for Netflix’s Ranma 1/2 season 3 during the event.

The Shojo Romance: Fall in Love, You False Angels

MAPPA officially confirmed its adaptation of Coco Uzuki’s rom-com, Fall in Love, You False Angels (Koiseyo Mayakashi Tenshi-domo). A teaser trailer was also unveiled during the 15th anniversary presentation.

The series follows Otogi Katsura and Toki Ninomae, two model students who maintain perfect public images while concealing their true personalities beneath the surface. The narrative shifts as vice president Toki catches the “heartthrob angel” Otogi off guard and reveals a hidden side of his own.

The Fall in Love, You False Angel anime adaptation was previously scheduled for a 2027 release. Yasutomo Okamoto, who has worked in previous MAPPA titles including Dorohedoro, Reze Arc, and Banana Fish across various roles, is directing the project.

BEAT & MOTION Drama Heads to Netflix in 2027

MAPPA also revealed new details for the BEAT & MOTION anime adaptation, based on Naoki Fujita’s manga that originated from Shueisha’s Million Tag creator development competition in 2021. Back in that time, Netflix announced its plan to adapt the manga, even before the serialization began in 2023.

The story centers on Tatsuhiko Hirayama, a college student who abandoned his dream of becoming an animator before meeting independent musician Nico Kashiwagi. The encounter shapes the majority of BEAT & MOTION’s plot, leading to a creative partnership between Nico and Tatsuhiko that changes both of their lives.

The production brings Yuki Komada as director and Misaki Morie as series composer and script writer. Shūichirō Umeda and Aya Gomazuru have been announced as the leads, voicing Tatsuhiko and Nico, respectively. The anime is confirmed to stream globally on Netflix in 2027, adding another award-winning name to the platform’s anime catalogue.

JIMOTO SAIKO! Anime Adapts Viral Everyday-Life Dark Comedy

The third new anime is JIMOTO SAIKO!, an adaptation of usagi’s slice-of-life manga known for its exaggerated celebration of local pride and regional culture. The series follows Chanel and her friends defending their crime and poverty-ridden hometown, which leads to dark and chaotic situations spanning crime and violence.

Chanel and her peers are introduced as girls “who have never stepped foot outside their hometown;” who defend their hometown. Creator usagi has expressed gratitude and excitement, saying she never expected the manga she began on a whim to reach an anime, in Netflix’s official announcement.

MAPPA has confirmed that Netflix will distribute the anime worldwide. Director Tokio Igarashi is directing JIMOTO SAIKO! anime, with long-time fan aiko singing the theme song Milk.

This new anime lineup carries a strategic weight for MAPPA. These three mark a romance and slice-of-life focused lineup for the studio, which has built its identity through titles including  Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Attack on Titan Final Season, and Vinland Saga.

However, unlike most animation studios, MAPPA has always kept a genre diversity in its works with titles such as Yuri!!! On Ice, Banana Fish, and the current highest-rated anime on MAL, Frieren. Adapting manga like BEAT & MOTION and Fall in Love, You False Angels, will further expand its portfolio, instead of building an identity around any particular genre.

As anime streaming services continue seeking diverse anime content for global audiences, MAPPA’s anniversary slate suggests the studio is positioning itself for long-term growth beyond the shonen market that fueled its rise over the past decade.
