OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Ads to India
ChatGPT Ads arrive in India with more than 50 brands set to launch campaigns this week.
Highlights
- ChatGPT ads are now available to logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers in India.
- OpenAI is expanding its advertising business with WPP and Omnicom as its first agency partners in India.
- India has more than 100M weekly ChatGPT users, making it OpenAI’s second-largest market.
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in India, bringing sponsored placements to logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. The rollout targets one of ChatGPT’s largest markets as OpenAI expands advertising alongside subscription and enterprise revenue.
The move comes as OpenAI prepares for a potential public-market debut after confidentially filing for an IPO in June 2026. Its revenue reached $6.7B USD in the June quarter, up from $5.7B previously, while its operating loss widened to $12.3B from $9.3B.
How Will ChatGPT Ads Work in India?
Ads will appear below responses when a relevant sponsored product or service is available.
They will be clearly labelled and visually separated from ChatGPT’s answers. The Go plan costs INR 399 per month in India, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education users will remain ad-free.
WPP and Omnicom are OpenAI’s first agency partners in India, covering strategy, measurement, creative, brand safety, and campaign execution. More than 50 brands are expected to launch this week. Self-serve Ads Manager opens Sep 4, 2026, with daily budgets from INR 725.
India is OpenAI’s second-largest ChatGPT market, with more than 100M weekly users as of February 2026. The company reported that its weekly active users have doubled year-over-year (YoY), while ChatGPT has crossed 1B weekly users globally.
Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s vice president and head of global ads solutions, stated that India is a dynamic market where people use ChatGPT to “learn, build, and discover.”
What is Next for ChatGPT Ads?
OpenAI noted that ads will not influence ChatGPT responses. Advertisers will not receive users’ chats, histories, memories, or personal details, and the company does not sell user data. Campaign reporting will instead provide aggregate metrics such as impressions and clicks.
Ads will be excluded from accounts identified as belonging to minors and from sensitive areas, including politics, health, and mental health.
OpenAI announced its advertising plans in January 2026, began testing in the U.S. in February, and said the pilot reached $100M USD in annualized revenue within six weeks. It later expanded to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K., Brazil, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and 31 European countries.
The company expects to introduce more ad formats, objectives, and buying options.
