Reliance Jio and Google to Offer Indians Free Gemini 2.5 AI Pro

Jio and Google have partnered to offer free access to Gemini 2.5 AI Pro, intensifying competition with Airtel's Perplexity and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go free plans.

  • Reliance Jio users aged 18–25 to get immediate access to free Gemini 2.5 AI Pro services for 18 months.
  • The Google-Reliance partnership further aims to expand Google Cloud and enterprise AI tools in India.
  • The move challenges Airtel’s Perplexity Pro and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go plans in the Indian market.

Indians are all set to receive access to Google Gemini 2.5 AI Pro, as Reliance Jio partners with the tech giant. The decision comes just weeks after Google announced plans to invest $15 billion USD in AI infrastructure capacity in India, its largest investment ever in the important South Asian region.

This will intensify competition in the Indian AI space due to other tie-ups between Airtel with Perplexity AI Pro and OpenAI’s free ChatGPT Go. OpenAI also intends to invest significantly in India, while aiming to open an office in the capital city of the country by the end of this year. They have tagged the Indian market as the second-best for the company after the U.S., having millions of users, which is the prime reason for their heavy engagement within India.

Google’s partnership with Jio may affect OpenAI’s strategy, since Jio is the largest used network in the country. As per Reuters, Reliance Jio has said in a statement that they intend to expand this AI plan in such a way that it would include every Jio customer nationwide "in the shortest time possible."

By providing free plans for premium services, these companies aim to liberalize the use of AI and capture the growing Indian market.

Reliance Jio vs. Airtel vs. OpenAI

Reliance Jio’s plan will provide users 18 months of free access to the Gemini 2.5 AI Pro model, which is worth ₹1,950 per month, amounting to ₹35,100 in total. It will include premium features like Veo 3.1 video generation, NotebookLM, and AI assistance directly within Gmail and other Google apps, which will aid in creating spreadsheets, dashboards, etc.

This plan will also offer real-time grounding through Google Search, 2 TB of cloud storage. It will benefit the users as well with unlimited chats, documents, files, image uploads, and AI analysis. All of these features can be activated easily through the MyJio App.

In comparison, the Perplexity Pro service, offered by Airtel, provides users with a research-oriented experience valued at ₹17,000 for 12 months. Users will gain access to GPT, Claude, and Gemini, as well as other tools for document analysis and answering. The answers generated will also have citations.

Airtel’s place will also provide services from Perplexity Labs for web app creation. Nevertheless, its daily usage limit is set to 300 advanced searches per day. The Perplexity Pro service will be available through the Airtel Thanks app for all Airtel users, which includes prepaid, postpaid, broadband, and DTH subscribers.

However, OpenAI's ChatGPT Go free plan, which will be launching on November 4, 2025, does not include advanced ecosystem integrations, storage, or file handling. It is based more on providing conversational AI services, but you can experience higher message limits, image generation, and GPT-5 access. The plan also has a 12-month free access, and is more affordable in nature, valued at ₹4,788.

Reliance Jio x Google: Broader Future Strategy

Reliance Jio's plan of providing premium Gemini services is helmed under Reliance Intelligence, a subsidiary launched in September. This subsidiary aims to build high-scale data centers in Gujarat, attracting global AI talent to India.

Indicating a broader synergy between Reliance and Google, this free Gemini plan will provide anyone between the ages of 18 to 25 with immediate access via certain telecom plans.

Not only that, as reported by The Hindu, Reliance will now work with Google Cloud to grow accessibility of its AI hardware accelerators (TPUs) on the enterprise front. Reliance intends to distribute the tech giant's enterprise AI tools in India while serving as a strategic go-to-market partner for the subscriptions of Google Gemini in the sector.
